The manual is most likely referring the the cable between the battery and the frame. The metal body of the car is grounded because the negative terminal of the battery is connected straight to it. I've never looked at the battery that closely, but it's worth a shot. Another thing to keep in mind is that this ground wire is typically less then 18" long. At short distances higher guage wires can carry a significant more amount of current. 4 gauge would be overkill. 8 gauge is all you should ever need, at least with the stock alternator!

Whats interesting about the G35 is that the ground from the battery only goes to the fender. In all the other cars I've owned there was always two grounds one to the fender and one directly to the engine block. This has been the case for Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Lexus, Acura. I wonder if it's a Nissan thing?
