My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
ROFL....yah it is MUCH easier now to take apart the dash hehe
Thanks guys, i had a rather enjoyable time working on this install. Quite a nice learning experience.
crash you really want to know what i used to cover up the gap?
Well, I used some old foam from one of my really old motherboard boxes. They used to come surrounded with a thin layer of this grey foam, so i cut it to width...about 7 1/4 inches by about 1 1/2 inches. Then folded this in half and stuffed it between the 2 din's..... Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
no because as i said the depth is only 1 1/2 inches but then i bent it in half, so the actual depth of it is only 3/4 of an inch by 7 1/4 inches wide (thats how wide the din is i believe)

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
oh... i got it. The foam only sits in the front of the decks but doesn't extend to the 6 7/8" DEPTH.......Ohhhhhh.......
But still, the foam isn't flame retardent huh? My Panasonic deck gets pretty warm, warm enough to feel through the roof of my dash pocket located under my deck.
Just don't want your dash to have a pyrotechnic show while Guns n Roses plays "Welcome to the Jungle".......lol

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
Great job! Thanks for posting pics. It looks good sitting in a half-inch deeper. Let us know if you find any place to get matching paint for the vent pieces. I'm thinking of taking a plastic piece into Lowe's or somewhere and seeing if they can match it. Now if I could only decide between the AVIC-N1 or the DDX-7015.
Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
dude it wont catch fire lol!
heat does not start a fire. A spark will. I hope your headunit doesnt produce sparks on a regular basis! hehehe
You are probably thinking that it will melt...well, if it gets to 200 or 250 then MAYBE it will melt. But the HU will NOT get that hot

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
So all in all about $2500.00 for all the parts right?
Where did you order your Pioneer system from?
I hope to have that installed within the next 6 months...I'll have to find someone in the bay area that can install that for me...NICE

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
Thanks. All in all it was about 2100 in parts.
I got the unit off of ebay for 1600, it retails for 2000 though
If you get all of the parts and a how-to pop off the dash guide to your installer, they will be able to install it in as little as 2 or 3 hours, so they shouldnt really charge more than $100 for the install.

Update:
Just purchased/installed the Innovatek FD-5-TV In-dash DVD/VCD/MP3/TV-Tuner for $139 from mp3playerstore.com
Fits like a glove! Just used some more "motherboard foam" to fill in the remaining gap.

COOL TV TUNER!

AT NIGHT- LED's match the AVIC-N1 perfectly!

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
my suggestion is that you leave the black a/c controls.
i was in the same dilemma too... but, i noticed one thing...
once you swap out the main radio... no controls are in the willow color. they are all black... window switches... heated seats... any switches anywhere...
and i have a black alpine unit... and i decided the black a/c would match better then the willow, even though willow is the oem color.
that black strip is also pissing me off too!
good luck, phil.

How does the Innovatek interface with the Pioneer unit? Does it plug into the unit you have under the seat? (sorry- totally new to this stuff)

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
yes it plugs into the A/V port under the seat, very simple to use, and works seemlessly while navigating, for example when a turn comes up, it will mute the A/V audio

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
I just put in my order for my AVIC-N1 and will get the end of next week. I'm also waiting for the other components (harnesses, Innovatek) and the double DIN kit. I've done all the HU installs in my previous cars, but are there any specific precautions I should take for this install in the coupe?

Re: My AVIC-N1 double-din conversion
hehe no prob man...
Precautions:
1) Dont forget to connect the N1's speed pulse wire to one of the unused harnesses white/green wire.
2) It was tough to put in the Innovatek because its RCA's and antenna wire stuck out the rear and are pressed tightly against the back wall of the center console. So be careful and use careful/even pressure.
3) Dont forget to connect the N1's antenna on signal blue wire to the stock harness green/white wire.
4) Give yourself 2 days or at least 8 hours to do the install since you are doing it yourself
5) Dont get intimidated by our complex dashboard disassembly. Its actually not that bad once you take it apart for the 3rd or 4th time....
