Anyone running a Custom Box for a Sub??

I am having issues with the bass coming from that Qlogic box and my JL 10W04... the installer says that the reason the bass sounds bad with some sounds and not others .. and he says the Qlogic box isn't designed for it since its a universal box and that a custom box for my trunk would make it sound great and only take about .75 cubic feet! Any suggestions/comments?

Hmmm. I don't buy it. I think the store is trying to sell you something.
Find songs that you know sound good on a friends system, and play 'em in yours.

Re: Anyone running a Custom Box for a Sub??

I think I found out what it is:

Since I'm running my sub off the rear channels... the Sub is picking up the lows AND the bass.. so David Navone suggested I disconnect one of the RCA's for the sub. Since a true bass note hits on both channels, I'll still get the bass, and only half of the lows.. which I think will help CONSIDERABLY!

Opinions??

I agree with the initial suggestion. I think its your box that is exxagerating some lows. Try a different box facing rearward before you spend money on a custom, or better yet, get a JL Audio Stealth box which will be out in a couple of months. It's a 12" sub firing downward and it goes where the Bose amp is now. You wont even be able to see it. It'll cost you between $500-600. Cheaper than a custom box I'm sure...Hope this helps...

Re: Anyone running a Custom Box for a Sub??

Bose amp on the sedan is under the rear deck

After disconnecting one of the lines from the sub (I had both L & R hooked up) it seems to of helped ALOT..there's still some residual.. the point here is the following:

The Qlogic box is .65 cubic feet, the custom box will be .75 cubic feet. The cost of the custom box is $125 installed, versus the 65 I paid for the Qlogic box. I CAN return the qlogic box and go with the custom box if I want, and the carpet match will be 100 percent.

Is the .10 cubic feet (and probably more importantly, the shape of the enclsosure) a difference maker??

Crud. For $60 I'd make the switch.

I don't think the size matters, it's all about volume. .65 to o.75 is 15%. That's probably significant.

Just goto the JL website and look at the recommended volume requirements for your sub. As for the shape, I've read elsewhere that perfect cube or squarish boxes are not optimal due to the sound reverberations happening within the enclosure. A wedge or some oddly shaped enclosures do better to increase SQ. Remember to take into account the volume that the sub takes when calculating enclosure volume requirements.
