Re: just heard a 12w7
Thw w7 line is arguably the best there is in terms of sound quality and sound pressure level. Even the most ardent detractors of the w7 can only really complain about the price. IE: "well for $750, I can get 4 of company ABC's subs" which to me amounts to getting 4 Kia Rios instead of one G.
May I ask how you were disappointed?

i'm disappointed because the sub was moving but it really wasn't that loud and it had a jl 1000/1 amp powering it. i was at work and bringing some stuff out to a guys car and saw the sub and amp. i asked him to hear it and he put it on for me and my friend. but i really wasn't very impressed he said he had it on half way but my image dynamic idq v.2 hits alot harder than that guys in his pontiac trans am i don't know what to think because i really had my heart set on a 12w7 but wasn't really impressed

A lot depends on how he had it installed. Facing rearwards always sounds better. Also you didnt mention what HU he had and several other factors that affect the sound...You won't know until you actually hear it in the exact configuration you plan on having...that's what I know from experience...

The music could also have a lot of subsonic notes that will move the cone (and thus you can feel it) but will also be inaudible.
In addition, there is really no way your idq v.2 can hit harder than the w7. Physically, the x-max just isn't there with the idq. The id max will compete with the w7 but that's a different animal with fairly comparable x-max.
If you put the w7 and your idq in the same car with the same amp with the same music, positioned identically, the w7 will outperform the idq (and most likely the id max.)

Gone,
Where are you located... there must be someone on this forum in your area with a JL W7 for you to hear what it would sound like setup properly in a G35... I am in the Mass/RI area and have a 10W7 that I think would surprise the heck out of you. If you're near me let me know if you want to hear it... you can even bring your own music to try.

There's so many factors in a good sounding stereo system. Car acoustics, crossover settings and the source equalization play a big role in how a sub sounds. Listening to one setup in one car and comparing to your existing car probably isn't a totally fair comparison. My very first sub box 15 years ago was a 10" MTX woofer in a custom band pass box on a 200W max amp. In a mustang hatchback, it *pounded*. When I got a new Civic in 92, the same box and amp were barely audible in that car. I got a set of 12"s ported, rear firing with 800w of amplifier power and while it got much better, it never really sounded as good as the single 10" did with 200w in the hatchback!
Your best bet is to find a shop willing to let you put a JL box in your car with your amps so you can really hear the difference. Be sure and use a CD you're familiar with to test, too.
