Newbie stereo question
Newbie stereo question
Hi Folks,
I'm from the Caribbean and am looking at getting a JDM V35 in the near future. Now, from what i'm reading here, changing the stereo in the US G35's is near impossible to do without dash modifications, correct? I also see that you're using JDM parts to substitute and make it possible. Does that mean that the JDM V35s are replacement-friendly when it comes to changing out the stock stereo? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Newbie stereo question
Hmmm, looking at the Japanese Nissan site, all the pictures of the dash shown (coupe and sedan) look just like the US G35 dash, not the one with the DIN openings that i see going into the DIY Double DIN mod. I'll likely be getting this car slighly used (7000km on it) so i won't have much of a say as to what options go into it. If i have to negotiate with the seller to have that modification put in before it ships, i'll need to know beforehand. It boggles my mind why Nissan would make it such a pain in the *** to do the simplest of things like putting in aftermarket stereo/speaker equipment.
Re: Newbie stereo question
its b/c of their contracts with Bose (and Clarion)......Infiniti intentionally makes it hard so people will be less likely (d/t inconvenience) to swap out the Bose/Clarion crap. That didn't stop me even though it seemed ridiculous I had to drop ~$400 just for replacement dash parts.....
I guess you can argue Infiniti designed the dash to look sleeker and more aerodynamic. You can also argue they integrated the stock ACC with the radio/CD changer on 1 IC board b/c present and future cars will have more electrical integration between the AC, Radio, engine, fuel injection, ECU, etc.
Oh well.....I also highly doubt the '05 G models will have a differing dash appearence making it easier to switch out the deck and AC. They would have to alter/modify the manufacturing line and process in the Infiniti/Nissan plants in Japan too much for it to be cost effective (unless of course they do jack the G's price up $3K as rumored for the '05's)
Keep modding........

its also a "theft-deterant" design, a thief cant just break your window and steal your headunit like what was so popular to do in the late 80's and early 90's

Re: Newbie stereo question
Good points, but from a user perspective the trouble outweighs the benefits imo. Anyway, I spoke with my importer and he says as long as we have the part numbers, the dash can be purchased/installed in Japan before shipping, that should cut down on the overall cost of the mod a little. Thanks for your help.
Re: Newbie stereo question
its not worth-it in my opinion... you will save $50 in shipping costs, but then again, you will probably pay them at least $50 to install it for you... i would just get the car, wait a few weeks, then decide whether you like the stock radio or not, and THEN decide to swap.
Keep in mind if you do go ahead and have them install the new dash, you will be losing your radio/cd-changer which costs around $1000 if you wanted to buy it aftermarket from the dealership

If the Bose system in the coupe is anything like the Bose system in the Infiniti fx35 SUVs then i'm already not impressed - my father has one of those. Having said that, I could have them purchase the parts and not install it. That way i'd just be paying for the parts themselves. Anyway, I've still got some time to think about it, I'm not ready to make the purchase right at this moment.
