Start with the dash kit, about $300 just for the dash kit alone. Start there.

changing your head unit is always the first step. if you're even thinking about upgrading to aftermarket amp(s) down the road. Look into getting a very good deck now. your system is only as good as your head unit. There's a variety good debates on here between the Alpine Pioneer and Kenwood for best double din. If you just want to go with a single din full audio deck I'd suggest Alpine (F1 if you can afford and find it - retarded deck), or pretty much any Eclipse deck.
Either way you're going to need a dash kit. either the JDM or Metra kit. The JDM heater controls look factory but you often lose the dual control functionality. The Metra kit will fit most decks better without any gaps to fill but the heater control buttons are grey rubber and look cheesy
That's my suggestion to you. start with a decent headunit build from there

JDM dash kit, all you need is the "double din finisher" and the "double din a/c controls"

www.crutchfield.com <--- stereo resource. you can usually find what you want cheaper elsewhere - but it is a good source to compare decks and find what will work best for you now and down the road.

I beg to differ with the HU swap out. It all depends on budget. A nice DD is an awesome option, as long as there's enough cash to do the job right. If not, there are ways to clean up the HU signal and keep the factory look, but you know that Troy. Cleansweep, PPI, AudioControl, 3Sixty.2
