Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

yeah as gingerbaker said.. it's not exactly like instant on... pop is like instant-on-off. Whereas instant on goes on, and stays on.

The fact that POP goes off so quickly makes it hard for radar detectors to realize what the heck that was.

Follow this link. A few sections down there is a great description on POP. Should answer most questions...

Excellent article - thanks! I might have purchased the Escort after reading that one, but The Bel came out pretty well too.

Going to have to investigate those laser scramblers now!

Hugely powerful yet with a liquid cat-like elegance. The car has it too.

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

An interesting quote in the article which may make POP detection a non-issue... POP detection ability may just be an early-warning...

"POP transmits a very fast emission at 67 milliseconds. The manual states clearly POP may not be used to issue speeding tickets as it cannot be locked and can only be used in the stationary mode. The manual says if a violation is observed, the operator should immediately put the remote in the instant on or constant on mode."

Yet, having an early warning is what having a radar detector is all about, is it not? You make a really good point about how the POP may have to be used legally, though.

On the other hand, what if the scenario is the POP is used to scan strings of cars coming down the road, and doing it invisibly to detectors which can not see it. The cop then knows which car to wait for with his instant on, and at the last moment nails you when it is too late. Yikes.

The cops must like this new POP radar or they would not be increasing their purchasing of them.

And no, there is no upgrade for old version 1.8 (pre-POP) V1 users. You'd have to sell your old V1 and buy a new one.

They did say that 1.9 is due out before January though, so you might consider waiting for that before you upgrade.
