Is it possible to program the Homelink in the mirror to work with a security gate? I know it will work with garage doors, so I figure this is pretty similar. The community I live in has a gate which I have to use every time when leaving or coming home.

The manual says it will work will garage doors, gates, and wireless home lighting devices, basically anything RF controlled.

From what I remember, I had to use my existing remote or had to do some kind of "search" mode....it's been a while, so I don't quite remember.

If your gate has polling codes, you're screwed unless you can get to the 'learn' button on your gate. It is like your garage that has the 'learn' button.
