Nooby wants NAV
Howdy ppl, it's my first time to a car forum so pls be nice.
I own a 2003 Sedan (Premium but no Nav) and want to spice it up with a Nav + MP3 + DVD + TV player.
I want the screen to go in the stock NAV's spot (I hate that dumb lid) but i don't want to cut up/mod the console or the stock parts (if possible).
I'm aiming to make it look something (but not exactly) like this
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=18846
I have absolutely no idea how to go about the project - what components to get, where to get them, where to fit them and how. To give you an idea of my ignorance, i don't even know what a DIN is.
It would be great if you experts could give some pointers.
Thanks

Izik on mp3car is on this forum too, I think he goes by the name SuperG35 on here though. He is also selling his setup:

If your in the market for a hideaway screen that goes where the cubby hole is, I am mass producing the housing I made for my 7" screen that will work with anything with a video or even VGA output and will require a minimum of effort to install. PM or email me at godofcpu@vt.edu for more information.

Re: Nooby wants NAV
damn! you sold it!
well, maybe you could guide me in creating something similar.
Let me start by asking these questions first -
Q1. Is there a website where i could buy a console ?
Q2. Which touch screens will fit in the stock nav space without cutting up the console ?
Q3. What to look for when buying a touchscreen ?
Q4. I am thinking of using an old P2 266Mhz system as a "carputer". You think that will be powerful enough ?

1. You should be able to buy the stock console at any infiniti dealer. Try grubbs http://www.grubbsinfiniti.com/en_US/ If you go to 6mt.net, you can get a 15% discount code for grubbs there.
2. If your looking to put a VGA capable touch screen your choices are very limited. Theres only about 2 or 3 7" VGA touch screen makers around. Lilliput and xenarc are the biggest, both have very similar specs, however, the lilliput is about $150 cheaper, but is made with refurbished screens and less reliable then the xenarc www.xenarc.com.
3. Lilliput or xenarc.
4. It's going to be at the very least $400 to put the screen in yourself, probably a lot more if you make mistakes, plus you'll need to buy a DC power supply and inverter and ITPS which is at least another $100 to power a computer in the car. You'll probably spend another couple hundred on various other parts just to install it. My actual CPU etc. parts (mainboard + 512mb ram + 2 Ghz Anthlon) only cost around $200 so, in my opinion, if your putting a real slow computer in, your not making the most of your other purchases and wasting money. The CPU etc. is a relativly cheap part of a carputer, 266 Mhz is FAR too slow even for something thats not going to do alot. If nothing else, your boot time will suck, but also you won't be able to make use of that nice $400 screen you put in to do things like play DVDs or use visualizations.

Re: Nooby wants NAV
Thanks for all the info.
Do you have the OEM part number for the console ?
I called my dealer and they seemed a bit confused.
They asked for my VIN# and then said i needed part#68260AM760 (They quoted $141)
The description for this part is -
Instrument panel - Instrument panel components - Radio cover - W/sport suspension
Black 2003
It doesn't sound like the right part and it's the wrong color too.
