After looking through the posts of JDM DD installs, it looks like most people had them poke out a little bit. I went the other route, and inset it slightly:

All I used was the face of a Metra 99-9999 universal kit. No new holes were drilled or other brackets from the kit used. Forgive the pics, the flash really made the texture on the Metra universal DD install kit look out-of-place.



The three little lines at the bottom you see were the "fins" I removed to allow the 99-9999 go down deeper for a better fit:

 

not gunna lie... just doesn't look right to me. but whatever floats your boat. I'm more of a flush guy

how does the metra look compared to the stock finish? and it looks like you kept the stock A/C controller?

This is NOT the metra DD kit, just the Metra 99-9999 universal dd trim kit:


I did not use those side-pieces, just the big single-or-double-din trim.

The metra DD face plate and buttons look horrible when compared with the 05/06 factory piece, as it's silver painted plastic instead of real aluminum.

The trim kit, however, looks beautiful in the car, but takes some trimming down to fit behind the JDM DD faceplate.
