Thumbs down Why do people hide their radar? Like I mean..really.

It's only illegal sparingly to have radar in some areas of the country. In my state its not illegal to have radar but its illegal to have something on the front windshield, but you don't see me hiding it. Further more, it's suppose to be in both front and rear windows sight. And those other people that put it millimeters above the dash....why?! It's not even good to pick up lasers if you have it that low. I've seen pics of ppl puttin in the instrument panel hood, or in their cigarette ash tray? Like what?

Just doesn't make any sense. Really 'that' scared of the po?

I think it's a false sense of security.

Speed limit +5mph or slower than the fastest guy in the vicinity while maintaining the flow of traffic is all the protection I need.

However, if you know that the po-po in your area are cheap and only have plain radar, it'll work just about anywhere in the car.

I don't think people hide them for that reason. If I ever found the need to get one, I would do a stealth install for the clean look. And I'm sure that's why most others do it, too.

I put my radar couple inches above dashboard on my windshield and wear it proudly. I even leave it on if in any case I get pulled over. Sometimes if cops are on side of street with their window open i'll keep my radar beeping to let them know I knew they were there the whole time.

Cops just don't bother me.

5 over in city, 9 over on the highway max!, never been pulled over for speeding. I don't believe I will ever if I keep it at those speeds. Hope I can say that in 10 years time haha

Why does it bother you so much?

The number one reason people hide their radar detectors/GPS/any expensive portable device is because they don't want their windows smashed and get the items in question stolen.

Suddenly it makes a lot of sense doesn't it?

Then why do you have a radar detector to begin with?

Yeah if I'm in a bad area, or shady area, I just put it away. It can easily be taken off.

And exactly, hiding the radar hinders its performance. Kind of self defeating.

You might as well get a vanity plate that reads "ISPEED" while your at it
Just another reason for a cop to look harder for an excuse to pull you over. All in all, they just draw unwanted attention.

umm lots of reasons...

- dont show off your stuff if you dont want people to steal it
- read about some mounting info on radardetector forums, low mount is better for laser because where they aim. higher is better for radar generally speaking
- there's no reason to believe that cops wont be more willing to give you a ticket if you have one. if you have one you must speed is a common assumption, we dont live in a perfect world where cops are all impartial to judging

i mount mine high where it still gets good radar detection but isnt able to be seen unless you are really squatting since my car is lowered as well.
