Adding MB Quartz's with Bose amp & Head Unit????

OK, I am not satisfied with the "O Mighty" Bose system. I was wondering if I could just add some after market mids and tweeters (more tweeters) and have them pawered by the stock amp and head unit? Will this work or will I have to add an after market amp? Thanks
D

It'll work, and you'll hear a little bit of difference, but you're not using the MB Quarts to its full potential unless you get an amp.

Thanks for the reply. Would you happen to know if there is a write up on how to install speakers in the G, particularly removing the door panels? Also, what amp would you reccomend for MB Quarts? Thanks again!!

Darren

Yes, look in the threads above by nycg35. He has wonderful writeups. What model MB Quart are you purchasing? I only know of their PCE and QSD line...I'd recommend using a JL Audio 300/2 for those but I'm biased towards JL Audio. Any amp that outputs ~100 watts/channel should make those babies shine.

Re: Adding MB Quartz's with Bose amp & Head Unit????

To tell you the truth, I do not know which line of speakers I am considering. I want high quality sound, but do not want to spend more than like $200-300 per set of 2. I have been trying to find out the difference and recommendations for the G Coupe on what speakers to use. Not much out there. Same way with the amp. Do not know which one to look into. I have been out of the car audio scene for a while now. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

I did just this install. Here's the write-up, just follow the thread:

MB Quart Install Thread

You can get the previous year's top-of-the-line MB Quart components (QM218.61) for a bit over $300 on eBay (new old-stock), but the QSD's will run a lot more. I used QM's for the front, and new model PCE's for the rear. It sounds great, even with the stock Bose Amp. I later added a JL 300/4 to power these components, (and a bridged JL300/2 to power my sub) but I would not hesitate to add just component set speakers....you will see a big improvement and can always upgrade the amp later.

You don't want to use the bose amp with mb quart. bose runs at something like 1 ohm and would sound like crap running Quarts. Get a Phoenix Gold amp or something. Q's on ebay are pretty cheap compared to paying full price, I even think you can get the top end QSD's for under $500 a pair and those retail for like $1400 a pair. That's a deal!!!!! PG amps are also cheap on Ebay. I paid almost $900 for my PG and they have it on eBay for less than half that.

Re: Adding MB Quartz's with Bose amp & Head Unit????

I bought mine about 7 months ago, and there were lots of these QM's around. I guess you've missed that boat. On the plus side, the QSD's were selling at pretty much list price while the old ones were still on the shelves; they seem to have come down substantially since then.

Everytime I check out the QSD line on eBay they have had some for around $500, thats a lot cheaper than the $1400 retail!
