Hit up the marketplace first, otherwise it's just as fragile as the one that stopped working in your car. If it's just as old, it may only make it a few months.

I'd rather spend that $300 on the JDM kit and get a new DD replacement.
If your current stereo's still working to some extent, I'd limp along while saving for something better.

They also usually go for a bit less in the marketplace here.

thanks for the input man, i appreciate it. the only thing is, i dont want to do the DD conversion. i like the way the factory parts look. you think i should just suck it up and spend the 600 and have the dealership replace it?

I would not, EVER recommend having the dealership install it.
There have been no improvements made as far as I know, so the life of the replacement will be about the same. There are 3 major parts that fail on these headunits: Circuit board, CD changer, and the power supply.
I do not know if $600 factory refurbished units replace all three, so even with a refurb, it's possible you'll have one of the other several-year-old parts go out on you in the near future.
$600 can get you a used JDM DD, and a cheap DD headunit, like the $300 (on sale) Pioneer U310BT. That'll give you nav (not a ton of POIs), bluetooth, iPod control, USB, aux in, and a detachable touchscreen. Throw in $80 or less for harnesses and steering wheel adapters (possibly available with the used JDM DD kit) and you're set.

For slightly more, you can find an X710BT, and gain a few other features, like video input, or go without nav and do the AVH4100.

Oh, and personal experience - my 05's changer is refusing to read from 2 of the 6 slots, and my wife's '06 already had a refurb headunit in it when I bought it in winter of '08.
