Double Din AC Dash kit necessary?

Why do people need to buy the double din with the ac controllers? Don't the g's already have that? Can't they just get the ones with out the controllers for cheaper? Is there a reason for buying a new AC dash kit when you already have one?

The reason I am asking is because I want to buy a double din kit for my in-dash nav, but I don't know what I should be getting.

It's not so much that the dash is available without controls, as controls available without the dash. As an electrical part, it can be damaged by shorts, surges, soda or shennanigans, so it's available without having to buy the trim to go with it. Also the DUAL button-equipped climate controls are a different part, but same trim is used, so there several reasons to list and sell them separately.

Some eBay retailers are a bit shady, and post just the trim with "Controls available for extra - call for price" so that they can list a(n incomplete) JDM trim kit for a lower price than reputable dealers.
