Painting dash trim on JDM Double Din conversion kit?

Forgive me if this is the wrong area to post this. I recently purchased the JDM Double Din conversion kit so I can install an aftermarket stereo. When I received the kit, the console piece is silver in color (which is correct), but the trim that matches up with the A/C vents is a grayish color and doesn't match my black dash / trim. I contacted the person who sold me the kit and they said that all the silver units are gray in color and none are black. I also called the parts dept. of an Infiniti dealer and they told me the same thing. Is this true? i'm confused because a lot of the pictures of the units I see on ebay have a trim that is definitely black in color. I'm assuming that they painted them to be black if that's the case.

This leads me to my main question; what should I use to paint the trim of the DD kit and what color do I need to use to match to the dash? Please please help a noob....

Thanks in advance!

Did you do anything to prep the surface or did you just spray directly on? Any other suggestions are welcome too. Thanks.
