Ok folks this is my tiny ordeal. i got the 05 6mt with the bose and navigation. Waht i want to do is get a stand alone navigation that will fit in oem mount and hard wire it in the car so it slides automatically and what not. but what i have been told is that you cannot just simply remove the oem nav with out first going aftermarket on a head unit because it would make the car go' "ok something is missing from me and i dont know what it is and i am not going to work like i should now." so to all of you can it be done?


Forgive me if this has been covered but i actually searched for a few days looking for this on here and a couple of other forums and i found nothing but "does my oem nav work with my aftermarket HU?" and it kinda annoyed me.

The factory headunit couldn't care less if the nav is attached or not.

Now, having the navigation screen go up and down without the screen in there, that might be a problem, since it ties into the navigation unit for power and to tell it go to up up and down with vehicle power.

 

ok cool i think i might be able to make something work like a flip switch for it to go up and down just wanted to make sure before i get to pulling it all out. thanks i will post pics when i get it down on what i did and how i did it.

 

update: Didn't want to rip out the dash for this project so i just updated the data for the navi and said screw it.

 

I recently purchased a 2006 G35 premium w/o navigation, big mistake. Anyway I absolutely love the car i'm thinking of undertaking an upgrade project. I already explored the Infiniti dealer installed option and at about $4k to $5K a total rip off and yes I could get a double DIN non factory system, that prospect means removing the tightly integrated setup from the factory. I want the factory look so I want to score an pop up servo from Infiniti factory of course (used), strip the old screen out and replace it with a new high definition multi-input display with an outboard navigation, back up camera and Blu-ray player. I need to find the means for energizing the pop up servo when it detects any input signal from the navigation, Blu-ray or back up cam (when it goes in reverse) and since i have an i-pod module audio access would be easier i would think. I would appreciate some input and suggestions.

 

My input: You're wasting your time on a hacked-together system that, if you're lucky, will cost a little less in money, but a whole lot more in time for similar functionality, and a lot more frustration during use. Having a "HD" display that's 3 feet from you is wasted money, as anything you'll want to see while driving is going to be big, low-res, easy to see graphics and text, and anything you want to see while parked you should get out of the car and watch on a real screen.

Suggestion:
Get a half-decent headunit and the JDM trim. If you want navigation up in the factory area, put a larger-screen high-end garmin under the cubby hole's lid and mount it there. You'll have more cheaply (or freely) updated maps, real-time traffic and plenty of other awesome features. The headunit will support iPod and iPod video. Do you really own enough blu-ray discs to justify putting a portable blu-ray player in? Using USB or iPod video on the aftermarket headunit will be 100x more convenient.

 

I don't know man in kinda feeling the tight integration with the blue tooth and the phone book from the old stock infiniti system. Its got the sirius/xm too.Yes i could save money but my mission is to keep it as close to stock as I can. I flirted with a high end navigation in the cubby, its cumbersome and looked like an after thought. Yes the pixels that close don't matter but i'm a futurist and know HD is the way forward besides 60% of my stuff in now Blu-ray its not a question of DVD, at this point i'm compelled to go this way :technically.

 

Have you see how good bluetooth and phonebook features on on modern headunits? Tons better than the factory system, that's for sure. Aftermarket do the XM/sirius thing a lot better too.

Just remember, "close to stock" in these cars means "close to failure". You're bound to either spend money keeping a sub-par headunit running, or spend the money and get something good now.

There's no built-in navigation system that comes close to what the standalone GPS units have these days, so yeah, it doesn't look quite as good as the factory navigation, but the functionality is worlds better.

Just the pieced-together system you're describing sounds like it's going to be nowhere near as tightly integrated or slick as what you're envisioning.
