Stereo Diagnosis Help: Head Unit or Amp
I have an '04 6MT Coupe with the Factory Bose stereo setup. The Stereo system has officially died after several years of functioning funky. My problem is I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on replacing the headunit only to find out the amp was the problem. Infiniti wants to charge me $128 just to diagnose what the issue is. So I was hoping all the great minds here could help me get a diagnosis of which part is most likely the problem.
Here are my symptoms and these are the same with all sound sources:
My gut says it is the headunit because there is such a buzz about the headunits going bad and not as much about the amps going bad and more about them just being bad. Also, the fact that in the past a swift smack to the console could kick the sound back on.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Here are my symptoms and these are the same with all sound sources:
- For years the sound would cut out for 30 secs - 2 minutes a little after being started up cold then play fine the rest of the drive. The display was still on and buttons functioned. The Sound would come back on with a pop from the speakers.
- Sometimes a good karate chop to the side of the console would make the sound come back on.
- Recently the sound is almost always out. Stereo Display still functions and it still responds to button inputs. Occasionally there are loud pops from the speakers.
- Sometimes the sound will come back on for a while at a low volume. Changing the volume makes volume number go up and down on the display but it doesn't actually effect the volume of the sound which remains constant.

This one's fairly easy to diagnose, when the sound is out, get a multimeter, set it to A/C and check for signal at the audio signal input wires at the bose amplifier. As the bose uses a low-level signal, you're looking for something around 1v. If there's no signal going to the amp, it's probably the headunit. If there is signal there at the inputs, and no output, the bose amp's to blame.
You can find which wires to check by the pictures and diagrams in this post here - the outputs will be slightly different, but I'm fairly sure the inputs are the same color between coupe and sedan:

Regardless of which it is, if you can afford it, this is a great excuse to ditch the stock bose system.

For me the symptoms above turned out to be the head unit. I purchased a reasonably priced repaired unit on eBay and haven't had any trouble since.
