Rear component speakers?
Rear component speakers?
Hi guys,
I’m from Down Under (Australia) and have a JDM V35 350GT Coupe with the Bose Navi system.
I’m planning my audio upgrade and so far I have:
Pioneer AVH-P8450BT, Alpine PDX-V9 Amp, Infinity 60.9CS and a JL Audio 10” Sub (model unknown, came with car) running off a JL Audio 500/1 Slash V1.
I’m going for a clean sounding system with punchy bass. I didn’t purchase the Infinity splits by choice, as I had to cancel an order for a reversing camera and use credit for another purchase and these were the best splits the seller had. But I’ve read a lot of reviews that they’re very bright, and given that I don’t need the 2ohm compatibility – I’m not really mad on running these as my primary speakers.
My questions are:
1. Is anyone running the Infinity splits amped and what are their thoughts?
2. If I were to run them in the rear panels, would they fit?
3. Should I remove the 6x9’s to allow bass to flow through from the trunk?
4. If I can’t fit the splits in the rear panels, has anyone put splits on the rear parcel shelf?
5. Where can I purchase decent mdf spacers to suit the front doors?
Advice from my American cousins is much appreciated!

2. They'll fit, but the tweeters have nowhere to be mounted.
3. Yes, remove the 6x9's if you have a real sub in the trunk.
4. Not that I've seen.

thanks for the link, wrathernaut - i found this guy recommended before but his site was down - he must be back from xmas break now.
i'll toss the 6x9's then, and as for the rear tweeters - i'll either holesaw and mount them in the panel itself, or make some little satellite pods for the back shelf.

Wrathernaut, got a quote from zenclosures to get the rings posted to Oz - but the postage is twice as much as the rings themselves ($40USD postage!!).
Will any generic 6" MDF spacer ring work?
I have bought some Focal PS165 V3's for the front stage - so will either sell the Infinity's and run some co-ax's, or just run no rear speakers at all.
Also - another question - I have one of the fiberglass sub boxes that mounts in the LHS rear corner of the trunk. It's very hollow and loud when i tap it with my knuckles - do you think some sound deadening inside will kill some of the 'boomyness' and make the sub punchier?

With those Focals up front, I wouldn't even bother trying to do a rear soundstage.
If your box is one of the 4080-style, like mine here:

They're really good, not boomy at all since they're thick and go into a corner of the car, the only way for sound to go is to be projected outward. I'm very happy with mine.
Mine sits on the other side of the trunk. It doesn't seem to be as large as that either as it doesn't protrude past the top lip of the trunk - more recessed than yours, so can assume it's a smaller volume. I've got no idea where it came from other than that it was from the US and that they don't make them anymore??
I did some reading which suggested that adding sound deadening to the inside would be pointless, that adding some dacron or similar would do something - but most likely muffle the sound and detract from that 'punch' that i'm looking for. The suggestion was to, if anything, apply some sound deadening mat to the outside of the box to add mass.....but I'll consider that once I've got the new amp in and get it all tuned up.
At the moment it's not tuned properly, I think the previous owner had no idea what he was doing as the bass boost was set to max and was making it loud as hell and totally out of balance. I haven't bothered tuning it yet as the aftermarket head unit and bose speakers sound so bad (no balance converter) that it seems pointless.
I'll take your advice and sell off the Infinity's - see how I go with running a front stage only. If i need more fill i'll get some co-ax's down the track.
