Sub/Speaker and amp combo questions

Hi everyone,
I'll cut straight to the chase, I just installed a 12" MTX Thunder Pro 2 powered by an AG350 amp (got the amp for free so why not use it lol) to my stock HU. Anyways, I'm looking to change the front speakers and eventually the head unit as well (JDM kit costs $$$$$$ as all of you know). I'm looking at a pair of JL Audio TR650-CSi Evolution speakers to put into the front.

According to my installer, the amp is overpowering the sub. So my solution to this is to get a less powerful amp (maybe 200W RMS) mono channel amp to power the sub, and then use the AG 350 to power the JL speakers. Or, since I'm eventually going to get a double din, should I just install the speakers (4 ohms) without an amp for now and then just connect them to my new double din?

Just learning the audio game so please forgive me if anything was a "stupid question".

Thanks in advance folks!

Zapco AG350?

Your installer is a little misinformed on power. Ideally, you're going to want a lot more power on tap than what your speakers can handle. This is called headroom. With amplifier headroom, your amps remain cool since they'll never stress. There's a more technical explanation as to why headroom is a good thing.

No, you won't blow your speakers. Not unless you're playing them at full tilt for over 5 minutes..and by then, you're speakers would've already told you they were stressing.

The JL's you want are cool, but there is better out there in the same price bracket.

Appreciate the quick response! Yes the Zapco AG350 the installer told me it's a vintage product lol. I was just thinking about the Infinity Kappas as well. So what do you think,

(A) should I get a new amp for my sub and use the Zapco AG 350 for the speakers?
(B) should i get a new amp for my speakers and use the Zapco AG350 for the sub
(C) get no new equipment except speakers and just connect them to my new double (eventually)

Keep the zapco for the speakers

Stay away from infinity and lower end JL.

These would be better

I'm trying to look up information on the subwoofers you have, but I can't find much.

Okay, found some info.

Power handling is 250 watts and it's a single 4 ohm driver.

From the T/S parameters I found, These like large enclosures. They would be Infinite Baffle & ported suitable. Ported would probably net you the most output while still sounding good, but you'd need a pretty large enclosure. Infinite baffle would yield you the best SQ & you keep 99% of your trunk space

I'd say you should toss the box and install it IB behind the rear seat

Right now, they're in a ported box that's tuned pretty high (mid 40's)

You're missing out on a ton of low end extension.
