I just picked up this little beauty. 2005 G35 Coupe

I will go down this weekend to get it. However, I have a few questions on its keyless entry and its primitive ignition. I've had a 2007 before with the keyless start. I can't imagine having to pull out a key and unlock/start the vehicle. Can I throw in the 2007 keyless start or a push button on this thing that allows me to keep the key in my pocket? Also, it says it has keyless entry.... but i notice the little black button on the door handle isn't there like on my 2007. How exactly does this keyless entry work? Or are they incorrect on the description? Thanks folks.

Ideally it would be nice to upgrade to the 2007 (or that generation) keyfob, keep it in my pocket, and have the capability of unlocking/locking the doors and starting the car.

 

Years ago "keyless entry" meant you pressed the button on the fob to unlock the car; no need to insert the key into the lock. You can probably retrofit what you want, but it will involve quite a few parts/modules.

Also there's no need to cross-post your question to multiple forums. There isn't a lot of traffic here so sometimes it might be a bit before someone replies.

 

Well.... Looks like I have an ungodly amount of research to do and money to spend. I'll get some handles from a later model with the lock/unlock button on them and get an intelligent start and see what I can do with them.

 

I believe '05 / '06 was when the I-Key was introduced but it was an option or more likely part of a specific "tech" package. And the I-Key version still had a push-and-turn ignition switch which could also accept the physical key. I'm sorry but if your new coupe did not come with I-Key I think it would be extremely difficult to retrofit. It would involve a new BCM, I-KEY receiver module, door, trunk and internal antennas, external door buttons, WIRING for all that, a new ignition switch, fobs, key cylinders, probably even a new gauge cluster, and on and on. It would be like rewiring a house! You may just need to enjoy the car as the retro machine it is and dig that physical key out of your pocket. They are great cars!

 

I could be very very wrong about this, but... in lot of cases, the wire looms have everything in them needed to make the various packages work, but if the vehicle didn't have that package, the connections simply didn't get used. Which makes sense to do, have one loom for mass production, rather than bunch of different ones to pick and choose among. Don't know if that is the case for the I-Key system, but one could probably figure it out pretty quickly. I actually like the "twist switch on the column to start" feature of my I-Key; it's a lot easier to turn on accessories than the push button on my wife's car; half the time I end up starting the car when I only wanted power to accessories....
