Too Much Load for Altenator?

I'm currently running a 5 channel Alpine amp, however I'm about to install my Double Din and radio/xm Alpine HU.. but I'm also putting in an Alpine MRD-M501 Mono Amp for my JL 10W3v2. Does anyone know if using both amps will be too much load for the altenator? If so, what options do I have besides the battery in the trunk (which I'd prefer to not do?) Would adding a cap help? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A cap will help, but how many watts are you going to be running? Are your lights dimming right now, at night, when running high volume?

the lights dim a lil right now when I have the volume set to 31 (max on the blose HU) I'm running 200-240W (50 or 60W X4) + will be running 275X1 (10W3v2) so about 500-550W total?

I'm currently running 2PPI amps, 1 1800monoblock and a 4800 4channel amp. Even with a Cap and the Optima yellow top, my lights still dims. What you can do is get a higher output alternator(not sure if they have them for our G's) that should take care of your problems.

ive looked, they dont have an higher output alternator yet, you can custom fab it but thats too expensive. i have an optima yellow top and an extra battery in the trunk and my lights still dim. 200x2 for fronts and 2000w monoblock amp. my lights dim at volume 25, with bass amp only at 1/3 the gain. i do have a 35F batcap, which helps. I think you can get your stock alternator rewound and would produce a better output then before, not gaurenteed, but it might work some what better. or add a battery or two and you should be fine.

fxg is right if you're cranking out serious amperage a capacitor, a optima battery and an extra battery in the trunk will only add extra stress to your stock alternator...just think what 1 item charges the entire system? yes your alternator. If you're cranking enough amps your system will eventually wear out you stock alterantor...years ago I had a mazda millenia (yes I know) with 2 rockford mono bd1500 and a rockfor 4 channel amp with an extra batt and caps and I still managed to drain my batt until I upgraded to a 200 amp alternator.

Yes, you can buy aftermarket alternators...years ago I purchased one for my Millenia from Ohio Generator which I still have...in it was rewound from a new nissan alternator and I had to have a shop fab a couple of brackets. I found this after market high output alt...check it out.

Hold up, your saying that a total of 550W is too much for the stock alternator? That seems a lil low in wattage.

Not saying that at all...but if you're experienceing dimming even after installing a capacitor and upgrading to a yellow top battery then you might want to consider upgrading your alternator. 550 watts iin my opinion would call for upgrading your alternator

550 watts at 14 volts is nearly 40 amps. The alternator is probably only rated somewhere between 70 and 90.

Throw in the cars regular electronics, lights and accessories on top of that and it's easy to see how the alternator could have trouble keeping up when the amp peaks.

try upgrading your powerwire from the alt to the battery, ive done this on most of my cars and it does help, hell my last car...a 97 buick riviera...i put a 4g from the alt to the charging post and it eliminated all the dimming, i had a redtop in also though, just my .02

Will swapping the OEM battery for an Optima RedTop (Or A yellow?) help the cause at all?
