Best Mounting point for SWI-X sensor?

Calling out all the SWI-X people.. where's the best place to put the sensor? Also, is there anything important one needs to know during installation?

I put the sensor facing towards the rear of the car and located it in the temperature display area. It sends signals to a receiver on the rear deck which controls the carputer in the trunk (see the carputer thread posted recently).

I am not too happy that the SWI-X is limited to 12 codes only and cannot recognize the steering wheel hold vs. momentary contacts. My unit does recognize the radio preset buttons when you hold vs. momentary push it.

It is nice that many the radio controls can generate a signal though (including the presets). Just wish that it could store more than 12 IR codes. (A support tech at PAC Audio wrote me that no steering wheel has more than 12 buttons, but our G35 with a AAI-NIS SAT1 and SAT2 AUX input with all the radio presets and hold vs momentary pushes can potentially generate 36 unique button pushes - and the SWI-X can only memorize 12 - nice...

When installing keep in mind that the process and programming is different if you use the SWI-X in conjunction with the AAI-NIS AUX input box (actually simpler) - and the SWI-X can learn steering wheel codes independently for SAT1 vs SAT2 (and will not do anything for the other modes).

Ok wait, so the steering wheel hold and momentary contacts are not recognized but the radio ones are? This seems odd to me. The AAI-NIS sends an output to the SWI-X directly. I would think each command would produce it's own unique signal since it is being processed through the headunit as opposed to receiving the signals directly from the wring of the steering wheel remotes. Unless, the headunit does not process a signal for a hold command from the steering wheel for SAT operation. Can anyone with satellite radio confirm if the hold functions from the steering wheel controls are used by the SAT?

I couldn't believe it either. It behaves as though it takes it but the steering wheel push and hold vs. momentary both generate the same code (the latest one programmed) on my unit. Maybe I have a defective unit as the manual indicates that it should work? I already talked to tech support and they were not helpful.

The push and hold vs. momentary action for the radio button presets work just fine.

I'd like to hear if anyone else has gotten the SWI-X to work "as advertised" using the buttons on the actual steering wheel (not just the radio presets).

There is plenty of room behind the moulding containing the shift boot. If you remove the side panel as seen in this pic, you will see a plenty of hollow room to put the black box in behind and off to the side of the shift boot area.
