Escort 8500X50 "Service required"

Purchased March 20th, my blue X50 detector has displayed a "Service Required" at least 5 times! A simple off/on will reset the unit until the next time. The folks at Escort are happy to oblige but has anyone else had a similar SES code come on there 8500 unit? All the connections are secure and the unit hasn’t fallen off the windshield because I made the aluminum bracket (which someone here made so I copied, Thanks ) and secured it with 3M double stick foam tape.

I've had my Escort Passport 8500 for 4 years now and just yesterday I started seeing the behavior you are describing. I will be calling Escort this week to find out what might be wrong and what it will cost to fix it. Did they tell you what might be wrong when you called?

They were confused also and asked me if the unit "self calibrated" after the "Service unit" display popped up. I said no and they were at a loss. They want the unit back for testing and replacement if necessary. Mine is only a month old so I'll continue to use it for a while to see if it gets worse.

After acting up all day on Saturday, mine worked like a charm yesterday on our return trip. I don't know what's going on...this is the only time it's ever done that. Yesterday, it did not even try to self calibrate. The day before yesterday, it would self-calibrate 3 or 4 times before kicking on the "Service Required" message. If you turned it off, it would go away, for about 15 minutes then come back. Weird...

I had the same problem w/ mine. Had it for about six weeks and then it started doing it every now and then. Then it became more and more frequent to the point that it wasn't usable. Luckily, I was able to return it for a new one which I've had for about 4 months now without any probs.

Just for comparison, I purchased an X50 red around 4/21/2005 and haven't had any problems, yet...

Yeah, same here. I've only had mine re-calibrate only once. The regular 8500 didn't have the POP radar built in like the X50 did or so I believe. So, is it true that you can send the radar to Escort in to have it updated?
