Cool SWI-X installed.. what a #R%YH!! + Observations and Review

Note to everyone: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure that you install your SWI-X unit when your doing your Double DIN. Taking the dash apart AGAIN (third time now. )is not fun, especially when your trying something like this:

Observations:
1)Plug for steering controls is kinda tough to get to. We managed to move it out to the side to work with it, otherwise would of been impossible.

2)The resistors that the SWI-X bring the legs are a little too skinny to fit into the socket for the plug, and in doing so, we broke one of the legs off! Which involved a trip down to Radio Shack. For reference, we use a 47 ohm and a 150 ohm resistor for our G's. The legs on the RS resistors seemed a little thicker, making things work alot better.

3)Patience Patience Patience with putting all the wires together correctly. As I mentioned in that note, it's ALOT easier to do this when you don't have the radio in the way, plus the 12v Switched power was already crimped to my alpine harness, causing us a dillema: We had a fulltime 12v that we almost used, then it occured to me that the Cig lighter was switched 12v, so we fed off of that. After everything was in place, we used 3 zip ties to make sure the wires wouldn't move, and then taped it all together to make sure everything was solid. We stuck the SWI-X box underneath the radio, by where the ashtray and hazard button are. Fits perfectly!

4)Programming the thing is another patience moment. You have to get every key in on the same run, otherwise you have to start over. We ended up programming about 6-7 times until we finally got it right!!

5)The LED eye wire is pretty short; I don't know how you guys got it up as high as you did, because to me, it didn't make it. So... We improvised. We ended up drilling a hole underneath the cup holders on the center console, and ran the wire up there (it actually fits nicely in the back corner) In the meantime until we do a more elegant solution, we scotch taped it to the back of the cover for the drink holder, with the eye pointing toward the Alpine.

Impressions: Once we finally got it programmed and situated, I started messing around with it. I'm VERY impressed with the functionality. I do notice the lag, but it's not that bad. The fact that I now have a mute button (sorely lacking on the factory buttons in my opinion!) The only thing I notice with respect to the volume is that due to the lag, sometimes when you hold the button up, it goes a little too far; I can learn to deal with that, as it's better than nothing.

My opinion is the device is great. I know the 05 Alpine models have a new plug that I think makes the installation a lil easier (SWI-ALP for those scoring from home.) A little involved to install, soldering skills are a plus in this, though not totally necessary. I give it *** 1/2 stars out of 4.

Opinions/comments?

Its a must have, regardless of the lags. As I was talkin with PAC themselves, they said they fixed the lag, but not for that model, actually they said it became slower for this model But again, congrats on the install, atleast you can take pride in knowing you did your own work
