Install H701 controller in headliner? LONG
Install H701 controller in headliner? LONG
I would like to retain the factory HU. I have the std. non-Blose system. I am planning on running a three way active setup using:
Factory H/U LOCd
Alpine H701 as the brains.
eD Nine.4 Bridged into Seas CA18NRX mids
eD Nine.4 running LPG 25NFA tweets, and an empty channel... (JIC I want to add rear fill later)
eD Nine.2 Bridged into an eD 11Ov.2
I will be in the analog domain for a while, so I know that I can use the RUX controller to set the H701 up, and make adjustments as necessary, but still use the head unit's volume control.
However, within the next 12 months I will be adding a carputer that will be running straight digital to the 701. Once I do that, I will need to have the controller in a handy location in order to adjust the volume.
So I have been looking for a convenient place to mount the control unit. Would prefer moderate stealth.
- Nav cubby is out. That is where the digitalwheelz screen will live.
- Upper glove box is out. That is where the Mac Mini will live. Plus, it isn't very convenient to get to while driving.
- Center console won't really work very well.
- Sunglass cubby is about 1/8" too narrow for a standard DIN unit to fit. It could be modded, but then it interferes with the rear view mirror when open.
So... I look up at the dome light area and see this fresh expanse of headliner. It is certainly large enough to hold a face plate... Is it deep enough? Is there enough room behind there or is there all kinds of sun roof motor hoo-ya back there?
Well, I pull down the headliner and take a peek. There is a plastic thingy in the way that appears to do nothing but hold a wire, and possibly add some structural rigidity to the headliner. It is velcroed in place. I easily remove it. Wow... I have at least an inch or so back there now.
Hmm... Sun roof opens. Check. Sun roof closes. Check. Lights work. Check.
I rush back in the garage and dust off a face plate from an ancient Sony HU and stick some of the hook portion of velcro on the back, and stick the face plate up there.
After driving around for a while with it up there and testing the ergonomics, I think this solution may work.
What does the peanut gallery say?

your going to be hard pressed to find a spot given everything. Any reason you don't want to do the double din swap? I think it would be more effective considering everything!
Could you live with just controlling the volume from the steering wheel with one of those PAC SWIX things?
I remember seeing someones G with a DVD player mounted with a cover on the drivers side door panel just below the window switches. I guess they used the door pocket.
If its a 6mt could you mount it behind the ashtray door.

It is a 6MT. Tell me more about mounting it behind the ashtray door.
I've seen pics of single din players installed in place of the ashtray and flasher button. I didn't realize the h701 controller was that wide so you'd have to remove the flasher button to make room.
