My limited knowledge of electricity gives this explanation:

An Amplifier takes sound signal and raises it to X dB level, etc. In doing so, the interference it can generate from creating this signal is enough to screw up most of the radio stations (In other words, the ones that come in clear, are ones that are REALLY high level antennas) and the weaker ones can't be received as well because the amplifier is sorta blocking it. Throw in a pair of amplifiers, and that problem only grows.

The other thing that was explained to me is that the OEM antenna in the windshield is designed to work in tandem with the Bose, so when you swap it out, and begin using the Dual Diversity antenna adapter, it wrecks havoc on signal too.

Thanks for the explanation... now I gotta figure out how to get XM in the car. I have the MyFi that I was planning on hooking up, but I can't find any good place to really mount it. That thing is too bulky anyways.

If the cd changer just sends the signal to the head unit, I would think the headunit can translate the signal and read the mp3 format, but I'm not sure.
call eclipse!
