Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I did a search and didn't find the answer. I want to purchase a Phatbox from Ebay, but they are made for the VW or audi. Can I get the harness for the Infiniti from Phatnoise or do I have to purchase the unit from Phatnoise directly? Can I get the harness from somewhere else?

no, i don't think you can. In fact, it does not look like phatnoise even offers the phatbox for nissan/infiniti anymore....but you might want to call them and ask.

I read on the Phatnoise forum that Phatnoise claims you can't just swap out cables to get a VW model, for example, to work on an Infiniti. I don't understand why this is the case, but that's what a few people had posted/complained about (question was posed by someone who switched cars and wanted to re-use his Phatbox in his new car).

Hardware-wise (excluding the connectors), I think they're all the same, and it's the firmware that determines compatibility between car manufacturers.

I recently received my Phatbox last month and it took them a little over 2 weeks to ship out to me. When I called them before I ordered, they said they could ship it out to me in 2 days (despite what it says on the site). I waited patiently and finally e-mailed them at the end of week 2 -- they told me they were having cable compatibility problems and that's why they hadn't shipped it out (would've been nice if they told me that before I e-mailed them). Magically, they shipped it out the next day!

Despite the minor hassle of waiting so long and a lack of communication on their end, I'm really happy with the unit. I have the new upgraded firmware that displays MP3 ID tags on the headunit display (so you can see song titles, etc). You lose the ability to use random, but they claim that is coming soon.

Well, the VW Phatbox works in my Infiniti. I bought one for spare parts (I don't ever want to be without my phatbox!!). I set it to update the firmware, connected the VW box to my Infiniti, let it flash, and all was golden with the VW box.

For $119 it's quite a nice deal. It comes with the 20 gb DMS and a USB 2.0 cradle

The trick is, of course, getting a cable. I paid full price for my original Phatbox to get the needed Nissan cable. And, you can't order those separately.

 

Though the VW phatbox is the same as anyother (Infiniti included), you will need a custom cable to connect phatbox to your satellite prewiring. The cable that comes with infiniti phatbox has an electronic circuit between the harnesses. If you can get this cable, you are golden with a VW phatbox and inifinit firmware (which can be downloaded via the Phatbox music manager).
