Hey guys,

Originally, I was thinking I would go with a Double Din setup, but now I am leaning towards a carputer, for the flexibility and options. I would want the DigtalWheelz screen, but they aren't available for the 05's yet.

Does anyone with a 2005 G use a carputer? If so, what screen setup are you using?

I am trying to think of how to mount my setup as well. I would like to keep as much trunk space available as possible. How have you guys mounted your setups?

I think a trunk mount is the only real viable option. I am waiting on Shuttle to release a new SFF PC chassis that will make for a great core for a carputer. I plan on adding NAV/MP3/Radar functions.

You can fit an itx board in the upper glovebox, with the single DIN converter http://www.digitalwheelz.com/G35DinConverter_About.htm if you unbend the sides. This will be a very tight fit though and much harder to maintain if you have a problem so I wouldn't recommend it.

I have a mini-ATX motherboard mounted in the trunk. I just put some velcro on the bottom of a case and tossed it in there so its not really the nicest looking setup but I need to to take it in and out a lot for testing stuff.

For something nicer looking check out this setup:

if it were me.....

id go with the OEM assembly and put a 7inch touch screen in it.
then id put a 7inch screen on the front of a doubledin chassis and put the computer in there
id put the remaining components in the upper glove box
id run the power cables to the back of the car where id install amps and sound decoder.
one of the power cables would be a regulated 12v.
id put a audigy 2 nx on the end of it and drive the amps directly. the audigy would get its signal via usb and would sit next to the amps.
id change all the speakers, add a sub (4080 box), and utilize the upsampling on the audigy for effective surround (creates good fill..)
id do a lot more, but thats the short of it.

unfortunately i dont have an 05, and where i am, navigation is useless.. so dual screens wouldnt make that much sense

tek> i've done something similar, but with the extigy (which can operate even with the pc off, while the audigy 2 nx cannot). The head unit output goes into the line input (after going through a parametric equalizer) of the extigy. The extigy outputs 4.1 channels directly to the amps and handles all the mixing (can play from carPC hard drive, DVD) as well as mix in the digital signal from Sat Radio (XM) as well as mix in HU signal.

(I used the stock HU + DW screen though, not 2 screens with DDin).

My original setup was a fiberglass enclosure (as seen in gods link or my sig) but it was an RF nightmare so I switched to a metal enclosure hidden under the trunk mat next to the spare tire. Gives me all of my trunk space and eliminiated the RF issue

nice... my first project used an extigy. i had it in a nissan sentra (the car i had before i got my G)... it used a single din sized computer w/ an 8.4" touch screen and an extigy that ran to the line inputs on a pioneer 9300 head unit. it was fantastic...i didnt run the 4.1 channels though, just two.

even though it may be august or later, if you havent done this before, id suggest you take the time to learn about it... a few months isnt as long as you think it is. GoC's solution is likely to be the most cost effective way to get the job done and still look really good... thats true for the 05s especially, since the metal design could all match together. (whereas oem navi has no metal trim iirc)
