So I found out it works on the airplane........ is there any way to make this work on our cars? I figure it will be more difficult, but possible right? Do we have some sound engineers on board?

Background sound input ---> sinus wave form inverter ---> speaker output at low level ---> Theoretically block out some road noise!

Is this possible or am I should I ask the same question in 5 years?

 

I could have sworn that one of the German manufacturers have already incorporated this feature into one of their high end cars.

This feature would work, but I'd imagine it'd be cheaper to just put some good sound insulation in the car.

 

if yo get it to work it might be a problem to hear sirens or anything that is actually useful. On an airplane it gets rid of the droning....

The new Acura RL has this.

 

The idea of noise reduction is to cancel out unwanted sounds.. ie.. excessive ambient noises, noise turbulances, etc.. you would still be able to hear necessary sounds like sirens, horns, someone yelling at you.. the technology targets certain common frequencies as well. In a car there are so many different frequencies in play, let's just say it is very difficult! Some of the cars that do feature an early example of this, upon listenting you will probably find it not as great as the headphone examples. As someone already stated, insulation and sound deadening material would be the best bet for now.

 

For it to work as well as the headphone varity, the cancellation wave has to arrive at exactly the opposite phase of the noise impulse. Position of heads in the cabin would be a fairly large problem to make it work broad band. Even a few inches of head movement will hinder the cancellation waves effect.

 

Hmmm, I suppose I can always wear a noise cancellation headphone when I drive.

 

If I remember right, the first or second generation Q45 had this installed on the muffler so you wouldn't hear the exhaust in the car. I'm not sure if they are still doing it though.

 

i agree with irishskyline. it would be very difficult and expensive for noise cancellation, and it still wouldn't work that great because conditions are always different. so therefore noise cancellation would cancel average road noise from tires, bumps and such.
