Question Rear Speaker Choices...

What are most people using as a replacement for the rear speakers in a G35 coupe? Not the rear 6x9's, but the rear 6.5's. It seems like the mounting depth is an issue, and I'm curious what speakers have worked the best for people. Any good recommendations? Also, do most people replace the rear 6x9's or just bypass them with a good sub/amp in the trunk? Any info would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

Depends on what you want to do... if you want to just upgrade the sound keeping the amp stock, try what I did with Infinity Kappa coaxials. They are 2Ohm speakers which integrate without changing impedence. Now if you're amping, then use the dimensions from Infinity's site to compare to others. If you want opgrade significantly and are feeding new amp power, you may have to go down to 5" speakers. Since this is just rear fill it shouldn't matter either way. Key factor to the rear mess that Infiniti calls trim is to button it down tight, glue if you can.. it rattles like a mother!

As for the rears, I replaced the blose with 6x9 Infinity kappas as well...these were 693 I believe in model number. Not sure right now sorry. Sound is light years ahead and all stock amping was left in place.

Topped it all off with a basslink II which really does thump this time around. The original basslink was anemic from what I read. This one, on the other hand, had to be turned down because it was making me quesy on Kraftwerk's Tour De France... go figure. (and no it wasn't the musical selection )

One other question...what is the maximum mounting depth that our cars will allow for the rear?

2.5" maximum - absolutely!!!

If you can find something a little shallower, it'll give you some breathing room for mounting to the existing 6 3/4" metal O ring bracket.

I mounted Diamond Audio D361i that had a rated mounting depth of 2.5". The rubber encasing the magnet in the back touches some parts of the metal panel behind it. There is an indentation in the panel, but it is designed for a small magnet, not a high end speaker magnet. You could consider bending the stock indentation even more (there is only empty space behind it). You will need 3 long spacer bolts (2"?) with some extra nuts to get the speakers to sit forward in the O ring bracket.

that's rear side I believe (rcdash sorry for jumpin in). The rear decklid 6x9 go down pretty low and are only blocked by the carpet-type shields in the trunk.

Peet, you have any pics of the Basslink II setup in your G? Was talking to a guy about the new unit, but I haven't seen it anywhere yet.

Impressive that you kept your stock amp. This is the way I'm leaning towards. Good info about the Kappas (have my eye on those, as well).

does anyone make a spacer for the rear 6x5 so you can mount a speaker that is more than 2.5" deep? might not look as good/stock but could be an option if you want a specific speaker

I believe that the 2.5" depth includes a 3/4" spacer. I don't recall what the exact depth is but with a 3/4" mdf spacer, there's not a lot of room left before you touch the metal. I went with the infinity kappas 62.7i 2 ohm speakers (~2" mounting depth) and they fit fine even with some sound deadening material right behind it. You could go with a thicker spacer say 1" but I don't know if it will cause the speaker to touch the panel if the woofer is flexing.
