JL 500/1 Amp TOO POWERFUL for JL10"w6?
JL 500/1 Amp TOO POWERFUL for JL10"w6?
Hey guys,
I've had my 500/1 amp and sub + 1080's box for several months and just got to a shop to install it today. The install went alright except for the fact that the installer told me that the amp was TOO POWERFUL for my sub. The sub is controlled through the OEM headunit and the bass is set to 0, he recommended that I don't go to 5 because extended play might pop the sub.
I know that a LOT of people here have my same setup and don't have any problems from what I've read. But has anyone else encountered this? Should I heed his advice? The sound I'm getting from the bass isn't the sound I want from spending a lot of money on everything. I'd like it a little deeper and louder. I'm contemplating selling my system if I can find some locals willing to take it (the amp was bought used, the sub is new and is inside 1080's box already), but I really like the way its set up.
What should I do?

I have the 300/1 to my 12w6 and it is perfect...but they ^^^ are right...there really is no such thing as too much power unless you turn all of the gains too high and blow the sub.
First off, your sub should sound good with your HU bass set to Zero.
If you feel a need to set it to five, either you're not listening, or the setup is wrong.
I suspect the gain and the bass eq are all off. Can you see where the settings are?

Actually too little power is generally more of a problem than too much power. When people have too little power they turn it up too high, and the amp starts clipping (putting out square waves) which are what really harms speakers.
Anyways, I have a 10w6v2, with a JL 500/1 and it sounds great. A lot of it depends on your speaker box, and placement, rather than the actual speaker and amp itself, although those are very important as well.

How should I set the gains and eq's? Is there any way I can pop my sub or mess it up as it stands? I have no idea what the installer was smoking when he was telling me that.
Btw, I have 4080's custom fiberglass box. The installer said it doesn't hit as hard because there isn't a lot of air space in the corner...

I Can Tell You That When My 1000/1 Amp Was Paired To My Pair Of 10w6v2's One Of My Subs Blew. I Had To Have My Extended Warranty Kick In To Get Me A New One. My Box Had Reccomended Air Space And Was Ported Properly By Tweeeter Audio Pros. The Jl Amps Are Just Too Powerful...they Are Way Underrated. Test Them Yourself, I Guarantee They Pump Out More Juice Than Stated. You Should Go With A 300/1 And Crank It. Its A More Suitable Combo.

I have a 500/5 and will sing it's praises all day long for the reasons stated above and more, but what I won't do is say that it will output any more than what the stated outputs are.... that's not what the Slash amps are all about, and that's ok with me.
And I seriously doubt a properly configured system with a 1000/1 will blow two 10w6v2s.
But hey, I don't know anything

This is not accurate when speaking about the slash series JL amps, such as the 1000/1 or 300/2 (I assume you mean the 300/2 when you say 300/1, as JL does not make a 300/1) that you refer to. The Slash series amps use a regulated power supply. Along with all of the benefits of having a regulated power supply (operating at anywhere from 11v to 14.5v, allowing for the same RMS output at any resistance between 1.5ohms and 4ohms, etc), you also get the downside (if you can call it that) of having an amp that outputs VERY little over its RMS output rating. Think of it as the price you pay for stability.

Well said

You're actually both right in that the J amps DO put out a little more than rated, but not as a peak thing - they're just a little under-rated.
Can you give me a link? Perhaps this is an older discontinued model because I can't find mention of it anywhere on their site or any resellers.
