Dilemma: Two 10in Subs or One 12in Sub???

Here is the scenario:

You have $225 MAX to spend on bass for your G.
You value sound quality over boom, but boom is still nice.

What would YOU get with $225(assuming Ebay prices)? One 12in sub or Two 10in subs?

Price must include enclosure(assuming its in the ballpark of $30)

Be as SPECIFIC as possible as to brands, pricing, and most importantly, your REASONS for doing so!

Should be interesting!

Save your money... a sinlge sub worth buying in my eyes will cost most of that, and then you'd still need a good box and a good amp, which can easily triple that budget... if you're on a tight budget, 10" SoloBarricks L5 or L7s are pretty good and have good, clean sound, but that'll still run you about $300 for two, not including box and amps and install...

umm.... get a saw and make your own box... amp should not cost more than 150 bucks (300-400watter). A JL 10w3 is about 150 bucks also. So wiring 20 bucks and line out converter another 30 bucks alltogether a 350 dollar project but u will get quality bass and a nice decent boom.

First: you don't NEED a LOC if you get an amp with balanced differential RCA inputs
Secondly: you get what you pay for. With that:

Let me get this straight. $150+$150+20+30 = $350. You say "make your own box." Unfortunately last I checked, you cannot pull MDF, carpeting, vinyl, plexi, terminals, wood glue, screws or grills out of your @ss for free... these all cost money. And totalling it all up it can get rather expensive to build a box. Beyond that, making a box that looks classy for your classy G35 will inherently cost more money than if you build a square MDF box and throw it in the trunk like you did your Mustang. If you don't mind an MDF box taking up 90% of your trunk, then go for it.

There is a reason that the 4080 box costs what he charges, and I was willing to pay every penny of it.

I run a single 10w3v2 and I find it excessive. I wanted, like you, SQ over SPL. I wanted the sub to simply fill in the low end where my component woofers would not. I am very happy with my 10w3v2 and my 4080 box. I understand the 4080 box is out of your budget. Unfortunately, unless you already have an amp in place and a box built/purchased, with a budget of $225 adding a subwoofer to your car is out of your budget anyways.

$175 for a JL 10w3v2 (shipped from ebay, no warranty)
$225 for a JL 250/1 mono amp (shipped from ebay, no warranty)
$50 for wire taps, RCAs, misc hardware, 3/4" MDF for box, misc glues etc for box. Note: $50 builds you an ugly box. No carpet, nothing fancy at all, just a square bare MDF box in your trunk.

Total: $450. You may be able to shave some $ off of the amp if you can find a cheaper mono amp that has balanced-differential RCA inputs. You could also possibly shave some $ off of the amp by buying a cheaper amp that does not take balanced-differential inputs, and get a LOC that will convert the balanced-differential signal to the standard single-ended signal (LOC's do not do this by default, you have to get one that specifically states it does this. Soundgate makes one). I think finding a decent (not fancy) amp + appropriate LOC for < $225 will be difficult though. The JL 250/1 has a regulated power supply, which also eliminates the need for a capacitor- something you may need depending on current draw.

I don't like to **** on people's parades, but $225 ain't gonna cut it unless you already have the box, the amp, or can get stuff for cheap/free.

If that price is just for your sub and enclosure, then it can be done. That's about what I paid for my Image Dynamics IDQ10 and Subzone box. Most of the premade enclosures out there are crap. I looked for quite a while before finding the Subzone box. It's made of 3/4" MDF and is solid. It also fits perfectly in the G without taking up too much of my trunk space. You might have a problem getting a box for a 12" to fit in the G. I'd suggest getting a 10" sub with a sealed enclosure. It'll give you the best bass for your $$.

Yeah, but just look at the pics. If you actually listen to one, you'll be as disappointed as Rene was when she found out that Kenny Chesney is gay...

Guys, the $225ish budget DOES NOT include amp or install.

FYI, the amp is a 4-channel 600w amp powering Diamond Audio components up front, leaving me with 2channels to bridge for the sub/s.

A local G owner is still selling his two 8" Eclipse subs I think for like $130. You could probably get a decent box made for $100.

Personally, I like boston accoustics 12" pro series. It has wonderfull bass that is very tight and plenty loud for my style. (it's a sealed enclousre) I prefer tight bass as opposed to the loud rattle style.

I've got a MB Quarts 12" double voice coil in a nice box if your interested. I had it in the car for a while and was fairly impressed with it. I think it's a four ohm if I remember right. The boston is a single voice coil 2 ohm.

Anyway, for two hundred bucks your wil be hard pressed. If your interested in the MB Quarts I'll look in the closet and get the details on it. It's actually new as I bought it for my wife's brother and then by the time I got it to him he no longer needed it, so I just goofed around with it a few times comparing it to the Boston and found the Boston to be a better sub. The MB is a pretty darn good sub though I think for the money. Similarly to the Boston, it's a sealed enclosure and is pretty tight sounding if it's tight and not bommy your looking for.

Take a quick peek at that MBQ sub and let me know which model sub it is and how much you are looking for it. Just shoot me a PM when you know...
