The I key unlocks the ignition cylinder. Which is not needed for remote start. So actually it is that easy. Not sure why you would have had a problem doing one.

Whether you have the I key or the standard, your only leaving the valet key in the box which doesnt affect the car itself. It is as posted above only powered up when you activate remote start.
