Custom Fiberglass Enclosure

Ok...I was able to make a little more progress this past weekend on my box...not too much tho. It's a custom 12" enclosure for my 12W6v2. It requires 1.25 cu. ft. of airspace for optimum performance. I spot checked/averaged the space it currently has based on the packing peanuts I had in the (JL recommended) 18" x 14" x 12" cardboard box I made. I didn't take pics of the progress from start to finish because it's pretty much the same as the tutorials I used: http://web.njit.edu/~cas1383/proj/main/ http://www.geocities.com/twztd_ion/frame.html The box is pretty heavy as is...and it's only gonna get heaver. lol Like 4080's box, it sits on the left side of the Coupe's trunk. It has about 7 or 8 layers of glass. The fleece I have is pretty thick, so I'll probably put about 3 layers over it. I plan on putting carpet over it, so it's not gonna look as pretty as other fiberglass work on here such as G352NV's. I'll post more pics when it's complete.

is the 12w6v2 really THAT DEEP? it looks like you've left like 14 inches of depth behind the MDF ring?

Awesome job!
Were doing our projects in parallel, I just started my first round of glass on my custom 12" box in the same location. Kappa Perfect 12".

I'll try to get some digitals also, keep us updated!

Thanks.

In order for me to get the recommended air space, I had to do it that way. Mounting depth for the 12w6v2 is 7.6 inches...so that plus the additional minimum 2 puts it at 9.6. I think I have about twice that.

More progress

Here's the almost finished box. I still need to glass the edges and a little on the inside, so it can flow better...10 mins of work probably. I can't decide if I want to carpet it or bondo and paint it. Being my first fiberglass project, it didn't turn out how I wanted it to. It doesn't fit as snug as I would've liked...like 4080's box. But I'll probably do another than fits better and is little shorter, as it will use up more space in the corner.

I'm planning on glassing the right side for my EQ, cap and distro block, That's not gonna be nearly as much work as the box of course. Not sure when I'm gonna get around to that tho.

keep it up. Think about how it sounds and what will need to be done to improve on the MrDigiBOX2... ok, not sure about the naming thing, I'll leave that up to you.

Good luck!!

When starting a fiberglass project, what are all the materials and tools needed? I really want to do some more hands on with my car other than just mechanical stuff. I guess i will need bondo to cover the glass once its done so i can sand, prime, and paint it?

Look at the 2 links I posted above. You're right about the bondo part.

Almost done...

Behold, my first fiberglass project....I spent most of my night bondo-ing and sanding. I primered it...it really shows the imperfections. I have to sand some more. The box didn't come out the way I wanted it to. There's a lot of space between the top of the box and where it was supposed to touch the ceiling of the trunk. THe airspace is only about 1 cu ft. as opposed to the 1.25 I was hoping for. I'm definitely gonna be building another that fits as snug as 4080's box and also with the correct airspace. I'm painting it the color of my car, Twilight Blue. The plan is have it done by tomorrow, so I'll post pics of the final thing within the next couple days or so.
