How to convert Sirius to XM

I'm picking up a 6MT '06 this coming week but it's coming with Sirius but I prefer XM. Is this going to be an easy change over later on (I figure I'll use the 3 free months and then switch it)? I'm pretty good at installing stuff (put an entire replacement system in my 350Z) but just wondering if it's as simple as swapping out the receiver/antenna and where those components are located?

Thanks!

I have an 04, an mine is in the trunk. Take out the spare tire and there is one bolt on the drivers side 10mm. The piece comes out, and the Bose amp and XM/Sirus unit is on the right of it.

I would assume just changing the receiver and the antenna too.

Thanks a lot. Hopefully however it plugs into the head unit is the same connector from XM or Sirius.

If you pick up the XM radio designed for our cars, it should be pretty much plug and play.

Damn, where were you a week ago! I just picked up an '06 6MT with XM but I wanted Sirius! I purchased the Sirius module and antenna from infiniti and swapped it in last weekend. It was relatively easy, but removing the wire cover taped to the rear window was kind of a pain (you have to scrape all of the foam tape residue off with a razor blade). Otherwise it's pretty simple.

I have my stock XM antenna and module if you'd like one on the cheap! They're both in perfect working order but I did scratch the XM antenna slightly when removing it. The dealer wants $210 for the '06 module and $68 for the '06 antenna, plus $28 for the wire cover. You'll need to purchase a wire cover (they're not re-usable) and an antenna re-install kit (which is just an adhesive pad, $5 I believe), but I'll give you the module and antenna with install kit for $175 shipped. I never activated it, so you should still be able to get the 3 months free!

Also, note that the '06 modules / antennae are different than the '03-'05 ones (they're actually cheaper and smaller).

Is it the same as if you buy an aftermarket conversion kit for a non OEM HU? I put a kenwood player in my 350Z and added XM to it so I have that entire kit. I know the module is different but wondered if the antennae was the same.

The antennae are probably the same, but the Infiniti versions mate up to the wire covers nicely.

If you want, you could just run the antenna up to the trunk lid. make for an easier install and in cleaner look IMO. Thats where i have mine no reception issues

Well, my salesman (so take it with a grain of salt) said the antenna will work whether it is Sirius or XM. I was fairly sure they wouldn't but it can't hurt to try I guess.

You can give it a try and it will most likely work, but not as well as the correct antenna. Sirius operates at 2320.00-2332.50 MHz, and XM operates at 2332.50-2345.00 MHz. The patches in the antennae are probably optimized for their specific 12.5 MHz allocation, but there's probably enough slop in that to work under most circumstances (with some lower received power). However if the antenna has an embedded bandpass filter or low noise amplifier, then it's quite possible that they won't work between systems (since it'd filter out any frequencies outside of their allocation).

So, do you at least want my XM module?

The satellite antennae are not interchangeable. You can not use a Sirius antenna with a XM system or the other way around.
