iPod Install in Ashtray with USA SPEC *PICS*

So this is my install in the ashtray with the USA SPEC PA-11. It is not totally complete, because I have found two things I am going to improve upon this weekend. First off, the angle of the ipod is almost perfectly upright. I am going to install a "stopper" that will not allow the ashtray to totally open. This will allow the iPod to lean back towards the radio a little more. The other thing that I am going to do is reinforce the connector within the ashtray. After a couple days it broke free from the iPod wanting to lean forward and back. I have a solution for this as well. I will post pics later. Other than that, it worked well.

You can see from the pics that I zip-tied the connector for the USA SPEC to keep the locking prongs in a "closed" position at all times. As far as the rest, I used hot glue, it required alot of cutting with a dremel to get it all to fit. I decided to use the ashtray "insert" because it provides a good mounting point for the actual dock. This is a 60gb iPod Video. The last picture shows how I glued it to the ashtray insert. What I am going to do this weekend is add a support opposite of what you see in the picture. This will stop the weight of the iPod from breaking the connector free from the insert. Kinda hard to explain, but I will post pics later of this. I have a few more pics if anyone is interested.

Nice idea, I just dont like the Ipod blocking my audio or any controls, and I think it may get in the way of my 6M shifter. I prefer the proclip.. it also raises the level of the screen, for better viewing, since you have the Ipod Video..

Oh, is that a Sedan? And what year.. I notice the cig lighter off to the side.
And does your trunk rattle any? (Love the trunk setup!)

I was just going to ask the same question. I like the 10w7.

Probably an amp rack built (just a box to hold the amps) then an overlay with cutouts. Looks clean.

It's a 2003.5 sedan. I have a lot of fatmat in the truck. The only rattle I get is on the rear decklid which I will be fixing this summer. No big deal though. Here's a pic of the amp rack I built. It has fans and plexi over it.

lol. Funny you ask. My initial design was to incorporate the spare tire. (which it still has). It is definitely possible to get to in the event of a flat, it would just take about 10 minutes to get to it. That whole amp rack can be lifted out to access the tire. The top overlay is divided into 3 pieces for removal. So it can be done.

Is it possible to get it at the angle of the dash panel? Does you have the video connected to the NAV? If so, how's the quality?

I am glad you did this, I kept asking installers if it was possible.

No, it is not possible to get it at the same angle as the radio face. At least not with the USA SPEC cable. The cable connector that comes with this device is very bulky. Because you need the ipod to be at an angle, it makes this cable come in contact with the front of the ashtray, not allowing you to get any more angle out of the dock. If the connector were smaller I could probably put it at more of an angle. Like if it were the size of the genuine Apple connector, I would be fine. What I am going to do is put a stopper in the ashtray that will only allow the ashtray to open up so far. This will give it more of a desireable angle. It's a very tight space, and everything needs to be cut/done at exacting tolerances. I don't have NAV as you can see in the pics.

Ok...Wouldn't the spot where the NAV would go be a good spot for the ipod?
