Angry Navigation system rant/question

I have an 05 sedan with navi and one thing I HATE about it is the estimated trip time. It doesn't calculate the time remaining based on the speed you are actually going (you could be in stand still traffic on the highway, 2 miles from your destination, and the stupid thing still says something like '4 minutes remaining' or whatever since all it does is calculate the average speed you "should" be moving on that road when you know damn well you will only go up 50 feet in that much time). I knw you can sort of play with these average speeds but that doesn't really solve anything. I remember my friend's BMW, his navigation system would adjust the the trip time in real time based on the speed you were actually driving.

Is it any different in the 06 navi? And is it a software updatable thing?

In the 06 Navigation its about the same, you can go into the settings and change the average travel speeds on steets/highways/secondary roads so that it is more accurate. One thing I have noticed, is that I think it does adjust the time according to distance already traveled on longer trips.

The navigation system does in fact dynamically adjust the estimated trip time based on the speed/distance you've already traveled from your start point. The average speeds that you set in the navigation set-up are what the computer uses to calculate the time it should take you before you start. The further you drive on your trip, the more accurate your time estimate will become.

This last point is the source of your problem. If you come to a complete standstill in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the navigation has no way to know what's stopped you and how long it will take for you to get going again. You might be behind an accident, but you might also just be at a long stoplight. The computer can only estimate what it knows.

Hence my complaint - the BMW can handle it. I wish the Infiniti could too. If I'm doing 80 or I'm doing 40 on the same road and my speed is going up and down, the ETA should too. Oh well can't have everything.

Its a hard call, you would have to do a study on the accuracy of BMW's system vs Infiniti's. Your basically asking the system to assume that you will continue to go faster or slower than the designated speed. The question remains how far out does it make this assumption. While this would make it a little more accurate in situations where the traffic\speed is consistent, it would make it extremely inaccurate if traffic suddenly halts or speeds up.
