AutoX Performance-5AT
AutoX Performance-5AT
This past weekend, I rode with my buddy in his STI at a local Autocross. I must say, it was one of the most exhilarating things I've ever experienced. A bunch of the guys there said I should autocross my G when the season starts again in March. The only issue is that I have a 5AT. My question is: can I get as much performance out of my manu-matic, or would I get killed by everyone else with MT's? Anybody have experience Autocrossing with a 5AT?

Yes you can definitely autocross an auto. The manumatic mode is effective, but I reluctantly have to admit that a 6mt would give you more control.
In any case I run my 5at and I am within a few seconds of the "fast" guys and I don't have a full year of experience yet. As I get more seat time I get faster. Autocross and track days have a whole lot more to do with driver skill than your car.

Auto and manual doesn't really matter too much on an auto-x course, at least for the SCCA ones I've attended. Usually, you're in second the whole time so there's not a whole lot of shifting. Now a road course is a whole different matter.
Hootie,
Mine is a 5AT and read my previous post (https://g35driver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73346). I have yet to be beat by any G or 350z, auto or manual. At least in Houston, every course I've done in the past 3 years has only required one shift from first to second. I don't see how that can possibly be an advantage to manual owners. I always put mine in manual mode and just leave it in second.
Go out, have fun and kick some manual butt!

I stick my sedan in "2" and go. About once a year they wind up with a really fast course and I'll tag the rev limiter briefly. This year there was one wicked course where it was actually advantageous to bump it to "3" for a bit. We try to avoid designing courses like that, though.
If you have the newer style transmission that only lets you start in "1" then you may need to bump it back to 2 occassionally after slow sections of a course.
The Brake LSD system that isn't turned off with the rest of the VDC is more intrusive than the auto tranny at times.
