General Supsension Question

plz don't flame me or tell me to "search"...

I'm trying to understand the different components and design of the G Coupe suspension. I see a lot of references to springs, adjustable rate springs, adjustable ride height etc. But I still don't understand fully all the issues and options. The Coupe has a 4-wheel multi-link suspension, which looks like a shock with a coil spring around it. Is that what is described as "coil-over"? When folks reference Tein "Basics", that is a replacement for the shock and spring, where the "H-Tech" and "S-Tech" are simply replacement springs over the stock shocks? What are the issues and things to consider when looking at replacing springs only versus replacing the shock and spring together? Just trying to get my wee pea brain wrapped around the concepts here.

Um search? I mean it's really the only way you are going to learn. No infiniti comes stock with coilover suspension.

I mean even reading the stickies in this section would answer 50% of your questions

Thanks Mr. Helper. Every web forum, regardless of the subject, is the same <sigh>.

To humor you: there are 2 stickies in this section, one is information on sway bars (not related to my specific question), the other has what I am sure is very good technical information regarding spring rates of aftermarket suspension parts. I read that "sticky" a number of times before I posted my question. While I am positive this is very good information, it is very specific and does not answer even "50%" of my question. I have a very general question, I would guess there are many members of this forum could answer.

I'm trying to understand the thought process behind people who are so quick to jump on the "do a search first!" bandwagon. Is it some power trip? Do you feel superior in some way by replying that way?

The way I figure it: if you don't know the answer then don't respond. If you do know the answer it prolly takes no more time to reply with the answer, than to reply with "do a search".

It's so funny you want to label me as a teh SEARCHA adviser. Read this:

https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v35-2003-06/87276-section-all-sections-really-needs-better-sticky-info.html

But if you asking such basic questions like "do I have coilover type suspension?", then maybe reading your owner's manual would help. Or Infiniti's own dealer marketing flyers.

I KNOW the answer. But just answering is NOT always the fastest way for you to learn. Teach a man how to fish so to speak.

You had the good-gens. hehe. I had a set of Z trackeditions on. Someone stole the car for them. Insurance totalled it. I threw some Z 18s on, cleaned it up and sold it. Saw it as my opportunity to get out of maximas and took it. Seems like a natural progression?

It takes a while.

Crawl under your car and look. The front might be different from the back.

Yep.

They are replecement springs.

That's a big question.

In a nutshell, it's usually money. Springs are the cheapest, springs and shocks are more expensive, but are usually designed to work together, and coilovers add adjustable ride height.

g35's have coilers for the fronts.... just that they are not height adjustable like those of the aftermarket ones like the tein basics.... for the rear, most aftermarket kits will provide the separate coil spring and shock that are tuned to work together for replacing the components of the factory setup...

there are a few full coilover setup kits where youll get a pair of identical coilover spring shock kit for the rear and not need a coil spring in the factory spring location...

Have you known anyone to try these?

I would be afraid that the rear shock absorber mounts in a G35 were not designed to support the full weight of the car.

that makes it even more humorous that you tell me to "search", since it's obvious from that thread that you 'feel my pain' when it comes to searching for something very specific and being frustrated in combing through dozens of threads with no luck...I DID in fact do a lot of searching prior to posting the question, hence my request "please don't tell me to search". In hindsight I set myself up for that I guess, my bad. Live and learn.

I don't really consider telling me to search "teaching me to fish", but I guess we'll agree to disagree.
