Not sure of the trade off between cleaning wheels every few days and pulling wheels/pads and reapplying antisqueel each month?

Having driven BMW and MB before I got my first Infiniti in 1990, I just learned to live with dirty wheels..........the mark of a well stopping vehicle.

But asthetics mean little to me as an engineer. I would rather wear a Rolex than have fancy wheels.........the watch is much less trouble.

Wax 'em

i wax my rims about every 6 months. it doesn't lessen the brake dust but sometimes you can blast it off with high pressure setting on the nozzle when freshly waxed. it does make washing easier and of course the rims look better too.

As an engineer if I know I can keep my vehicle cleaner and have the same or better brake performance from products designed without compromises typically found in production vehicles.

The Rolex does have one thing in common with fancy wheels, a major target of thieves. Interestingly, many knock-offs get stolen. A Navy contractor friend was rolled outside a nice restaurant in San Diego for his.. cops believe the valet was the point man...just be careful.

Update

have had the Hawk HPS pads on the front for about 2 weeks now. the stopping is equivalent to OEM with less "grab" and the dust is about the same as the rears now (very little). no squeeling, squeaking or other noise at all. i put the lube on the pad backing and used the Hawk recommended break-in procedures.

On another forum a poster stated that Infiniti only uses ceramics on the rear, that's why there is less dust.
I always thought it was because there is less braking effort at the rear.
In any case, I think going with ceramics is the way to go. Most other mfrs including 'high end' and performance, are going with ceramics all the way around.
Have not heard any negatives about Hawk.

I'm on my second set of Hawk HPS pads. They are great daily driver pads and even better with a little heat in them. I wouldn't change unless I was doing track time.

i used this DIY to install mine:

http://www.g-owners.com/article_read.asp?id=31

the only other thing i'd recommend is getting some lube for sliding the pins back in/out. i got some of the crc disc brake quiet at the local autozone. seems to take a bit longer than 10 minutes to get tacky for installation.

I just bought some, but had this problem:

not a deal breaker i guess.

what about the rotors on 6MT Brembo?

To all the people with the 6MT Brembos who changed from OEM pads to Hawk HPS pads - did you change your rotors or resurface them? I am hearing some comments now that the HAWK HPS pads are not a good match for the OEM rotors. Especially to those of who who have been using the Hawk HPS pads and have changes 2nd time or inspected rotors, how are the rotors wearing?

The hawk pads worked very well with my stock brembo rotors, no squealing. I had to resurface my rotors at 25k and i went with hawk pads.

I have a feeling the squealing has something to do with not replacing the rotors/resurfacing them. Brembo highly recommends NOT touching the rotors (of course they would say that). I didn't replace my rotors when I did my pads, but I will be replacing the rotors by summers end.

This wasnt true for me, my brembos squealed when they were new and got better as they wore down. Now i have my original rotors w/ hawk pads. My car has 46 k miles on it and i last replaced both front and rear pads at 22k and 25k. I have read that u cant resurface brembo rotors, well I did and I didnt have problems. I must say that the thickness of the rotor has to meet a certain criteria otherwise u might damage the brembo calipers. Excessive Wear and tear will play a major part in determining if u need new rotors for ur first brake job or not. I only resurfaced the front rotors, I felt the rears were smooth enough.

For my next brake job, I wont take any chances. I have already bought new sets of rotors and pads as well. I will need to replace brakes very soon. I dont suggest using the brembo rotors for more than 45- 48 k, this might be too thin.
