From BMW's stand point, they're only expecting to change out the pads once before the maintenance warranty expires. Their cost to change out the pads and replace the rotors is probably $500 if that. Last I checked, buying a comparable BMW to Infiniti cost thousands more so they're just banking on the emblems. If you're under 100k miles on your car and replaced both the pads AND rotors 3 times without tracking your car, there might be some problems. Try laying off the brakes a little. Pads should last you 30-40k miles easily. And rotors shouldn't need to be replaced nearly that often. I don't see how you're spending $1500+ each time given pads only run $150 for the set? With labor, that's $250-300 max.

bmw costs more. and when you compare the g35 with the 325, you get way more car with the g35. they could give free maintenance, but the car would cost more...

I shouldn't say "replaced" rotors...cut the rotors, my last bill was quoted for 4 rotors cut and pads $600...nuts..I read here that infiniti admits it has brake problems on certain years and I think I am one....but yes on the 3rd set of cut rotors and 3 sets of pads for front and one set for back...I am hard on the brakes, but that is nutz...only have 40,000 on my car...how could BMW expect to change the brakes once in 3 years???

Since you have an '04 why did you pay for the all the brake jobs? All non-brembo '03 and '04 G35's are covered under the 3yr/36k mile brake warranty they released after all the complaints.

BMW can void the pad change offer if they say you are an abusive braker......wearing brake pads faster than the norm average user! Read all the fine print.

Since 1990 Infiniti has been known a fast pad [and tire] wear car necessary to achieve short stopping distances on heavy cars.

Dealerships usually charge an hour per wheel because of the supposed extras they perform...............if they actually measured runouts and fixed them this would be money well spent.

The people at BMW are smart. They're not going to change your oil every 5k miles. Like any other maintenance program, they have intervals. Oil changes comes around every 15k miles I believe. For the average car buyers, it's assumed that the annual mileage is only 15k. So within the standard 4yr/50k free maintenance window, that's only 3-4 free oil changes for the "average" driver. Sure you can drive more and get it done more often but on average, that's what they're expecting and probably willing to cover. Same goes for the brakes. Under normal driving, it's expected to get 40-50k miles. So that's roughly 2.5+ years of ownership before a dealership would normally replace them under the free maintenance program. The premium paid for a BMW more than covers the free maintenance fees and the remainder is just pocketed.

As for your car, having pads changed 3 times within 40k miles is ridiculous. And since your rotors have been turned 3 times, they're probably shot too. Unless your rotors are very slightly warped or have scratches, there's no need to have then turned. After 2 turns, they might already be too thin and need replacement. I'd get your brakes checked out under warranty and stop shelling out $600 for brakes. Also, unless you feel the car vibrating while braking, you normally don't need the rotors turned. That's just nonsense money the service center is taking from you. Their theory is, if I get a customer to turn their rotors after each pad change, they'll end up needing to replace their rotors sooner than later.

True that.. Plus its like 4 year or 50K miles which ever comes first.. and for people like me 50k miles comes after 2 or 2.5 years.. If you end up driving alot..

As to rotor retrueing it depends on the technican and how much care he wants to exercise..............the venier can be set in 0.001" increments and 1mm is 0.03937"....................that means 39 retrues are possible.

The oem trueness spec is 0.0028" so if 0.003 was used that would allow 13 retrues without considering wear from pads so 5-6 retrues is easy IF the technican is careful and spends the extra time in set up.

Most don't treat your car as THEIR car so they cut away excess to avoid having to repeat the process............why people only get 1-2 retrues out of a rotor.

On my car I never cut deeper than 0.005" per truing. I have seen techs remove 3-6x times that much........trashing a rotor in a single pass.

bmw brakes and rotors are all covered under the 4/50.

the bmw brakes are friggin soft as hell-hence the major brake dust problem.

I expect my brakes to last aroun 20k miles.

another note bmw cant turn the rotors... they are very thin to begin with and made out of a a different alloy. because of the different alloy (sue me i dont remeber) a brake and rotor job will cost some bucks. some of the posts seem to indicate when the brakes are replaced they should replace the rotors too... again it'll be expensive. but its all covered 4/50.

ppp

It is an industry standard that front rotors have an extra 1mm per side from new to worn replacement limit thickness..............thick or thin is the same.

Just like most brake pads are ~~9mm thick [plus backing plate].

Obviously 7mm wear from pad corresponds to 1/2>1mm of rotor wear

The "brake warranty" is built into the husky price.

That warranty does not come free with the m series...you have to purchase that plan for the m series...
