6 piston 14in slotted rotors

Got wilwood front brake kit and broke them in
at thunderhill on Monday. I'd recommend them.

Nice, I wonder how much of a benefit a 6 piston setup would have over a 4 piston setup in terms of stopping distance from various speeds.

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

Actually, not much depending on the size and valving of the master cylinder. If a 6 piston setup is used on a brake system with the same sized master cylinder and a correctly sized 4 piston caliper, the results are nearly identical. You can only use so much surface area for the pistons, otherwise, the system will not work correctly. Meaning you can't have a 6 piston caliper with 6 pistons the same size as the pistons of a 4 piston caliper, if you are using the same master cylinder. The 6 piston caliper must have pistons that are smaller in diameter than the 4 piston caliper. Essentially, what a six piston caliper is good for is distributing braking force more evenly among the rotor, which leads to less fade and slightly better stopping distance than a 4 piston (if any at all). A lot of other things come into play, however, such as the rigidity of a caliper, the surface area of the pad that contacts the rotor, and heat sinking capabilities. There is alot more than involved other than just 6 pistons vs. 4 pistons. (Not saying that the Wilwoods are a bad braking system--I had them on my 2003 Cobra)

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

The difference would not be as great you might think..more pistons gives the brakes better efficiency .. more clamping force per pedal movement..also bigger brakes mean less power needed to press on the pedal to stop and they do not have to work as hard as smaller brakes to bring the mass of the car to the stop..that means they run cooler and less brake fade during hard abuse like track driving where regular brakes would overheat and lose braking ability the big brake kit would barely be bothered by it..
The stock brembos do a great job already.. but if you plan on running your G hard, a brake upgrade would def. be recommended..

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

HUM......THat looks VERY VERY FAMILIAR! I wonder why! Maybe cause i have them too on my sedan! Very nice choice! Do you feel any thing when you brake because when i brake i feel the brake pad goin over the rotor. Its kind of annoying. Also when i press the brake i can hear the rotor squeaking/bending! Why is that?

Thanks

Ed

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

also those are 6 mini pistons or 2 ful and 4 mini ones I think, compare to 4 full size of the brembo. I do like the look of the two piece rotor.

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

Hey G35Lin I think the same happens to my car.

I put Hawk race pads on mine and when I brake there is this vibration coming from the front wheels. Not ABS because I am not braking hard at all but more rapid as if the surface of the rotor is very rough. Is that what you feel?

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

Need4Speed,
Ahhh very nice! Those look like the ones from Breakzone ... the same ones I have been eyeing and am dying to have installed. The stock non-Brembo brakes are definitely holding me back at the tracks. I'm still holding out till the Brake TSB runs out before this mod. Looks like I'll have to settle for the slightly smaller 13" version in order to accommodate my 17" track wheels. Performance difference should be negligible if not non-existing. This is a very well designed kit.

Ed,
The ones you got are from a different vendor/designer (RMS Horsepower). Although subtle to the average eye, they are actually quite different. The 'noise' and 'vibration' you are experiencing are caused by the slots cut into your rotors. I too was surprised at how intrusive they felt last I drove your car. It may be normal for that particular design, however. Do you have the same symptom with your setup, Need4Speed? When feathering the brakes???

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

Rob,
G35Lin's problem is pretty severe. I'm sure you two are talking about two different things (I could be wrong, however). Unless you have slotted rotors, you shouldn't have issues as described.

Did you 'bed' those Hawk pads after you install them? I've used both the Hawk HPS and HP+ with my G and never had any problems besides squeels.

Wilwood usually includes Polymatrix "E" pads with their kits, this is a race pad, and usually causes a great amount of NVH. You can replace them with Polymatrix "Q" pads which are great for the street. And I'm sure you know how easy it is to replace with Wilooods calipers. When you run at the track, just switch over.

Re: 6 piston 14in slotted rotors

khsonic: Your explanation makes good sense. Thanks for the info. Another thing that comes to mind is does a 6 piston kit in general weigh more than a 4 piston kit, assuming everything is equal like material, rotor size, etc. And if the 6 piston kit would weigh more does the added unsprung weight offset any small performance advantages a 6 piston kit would have over a 4 piston kit? Sorry, just thinking aloud.

khsonic03,

OK, I must be stupid (and I KNOW I'll be slapping my forehead over this, but what is "NVH"? I keep seeing it, but cannot think of what it means to save my life.

Thanks.
