Brake bleeding. Perferred method?

Not sure about a rental, but my vacuum bleeder was less than 50 bucks from NAPA a couple of years ago. It was well worth the money, I have found a bunch of other uses for it, besides brakes.

I have this from Griot's Garage, it is a rebadged Mityvac with a few accessories for brake bleeding not available in one package elsewhere.

$70. It will pay for itself in one use. Since brake bleeding is recommended at least every 2 years and every year is better, this is a good investment. Get some ATE Blue fluid from Tire Rack ( it is blue so you can see when you have bled enough, they sell amber fluid that you use next time to monitor the beed,then alternate colors) and you are good to go. It works on any car and is quick and easy.

I actually have a hand held mighty vac, works great. I also have the largere as hown at Griots, that we use to change the oil in the boat. Never even thought about using it to bleed brakes. Plus one for the ATE, I bought mine from Racing Brake, when I got my calipers, but Tire Rack is cheaper. With teh new calipers I used exactly 1 liter, training the last few drops to top off teh resevoir.

what about the master cylinder, if i swap it out do i need to bleed it a special way

No. But you might have to bench bleed the MC.

It may help to bench bleed it before installation to reduce air in the lines. Add fluid to the reservoir, remove the line plugs and push the piston to get fluid thru the lines and the air out. Then stick the plugs back in. Install the master cylinder, and bleed the entire system about 3 times. A vacuum bleeder will make this job a lot easier. Or pay someone.

How do I bench bleed it?? What about the abs??

I recall reading you need to turn off the VDC before bleeding the brakes. To really bleed the ABS, the home trick is to bleed the system. Drive to a dirt road and slam the brakes a few times to activate the ABS and make it pump fluid. Then drive home and bleed the brakes again. Otherwise, you need a tool that shops have that activates the ABS pump while bleeding the brakes. I have done it this way a couple times on other cars.

I'm not sure on this but I highly doubt you want to activate your ABS system while bleeding your brakes. Nothing like having your brake pedal activate a 50 times a sec while your bleeder is open.

Unless I'm not understanding you?

You don't get it.
1. Bleed brakes
2. Go drive car on dirt road to activate ABS pump when slamming brakes to circulate old fluid out of ABS pump so it can be bled
3. Bleed brakes again

Shops have a machine that does this while they bleed them.

ow i dont know if this is right or wrong but.... A guy from a brake shop told me that the best way to bleed brakes was to just start from the furthest point away from you Master Cyl. Then just twist opn the reservoir cap and twist the bleeders open one by one. This should be done one at a timne of course not all open at the same time. He says that gravity will do the work for you? HE also mentioned that just keep an eye on the reservoir to not empty and i should be fine. Wait until only clean fluid is coming out with no bubbles and close bleeder and move on to the next.....???? I have done this in my Civic and it works great.... Will it work on our G's? Is this even right?!?!?!

Actually I did get it. I was referring to the abs activation while working on the brakes. Interesting info anyway. Thanks

Why would you activate your ABS with bleeder open? When you are doing the pump procedure do you have someone pump the brake while your bleeder is open??? No, so you CLOSE your bleeder before you activate the ABS, then when its done activating and dis-activates you can OPEN the bleeder. . Even though it would be funny to see someone do that, its just..... dumb.

I made a pressure bleeder from a small Ace Hardware sprayer, some 3/8 hose, and an OEM brake reservoir cap. I used it to push fluid into the MC while I used the Mityvac to suck it out at the bleeder screws. It works pretty good, but sometimes the seal at the brake reservoir cap isn't so good, even with the OEM cap.

Most of the time I just use the Mityvac, even on the BBKs.
