Are they even connected or is is purely for show? It's something different, that's for sure, and maybe that's the only purpose.

Wayne. The brake line is split and connected to each caliper. Hence the reason why the calipers look tiny or there is a massive master cylinder. Or the owner does a rice move and pushes the pedal down 1/2 way before anything happens

that looks ugly why not just get 8 piston fronts instead of that crap...and those wheels are but @$$ ugly

In that case, i would have to say 100% look-at-me-I-spend-money. Completely unnecessary.

In production cars though like the Viper and the Murcielago in the rear have a brembo caliper with an opposing single piston clamp style caliper used solely for e-brake because they chose to not go with an integral-drum design like ours:
