Loose Brake.

Hello, I'm not trying to ask any stupid questions or anything but I have an '07 G35 Coupe 6spd with a loose handbrake. I can lift it all the way up and it still rolls back if i'm on a small graded hill. I need to fix this, how????????????

Thanks Fellas.

YOu need to adjust the brake shoes and/or the brake cable. I'd start with the emergency brake shoe adjustment 1st.

Not sure how car savvy you are, but basically remove the rear wheels and then remove the rubber plug on the wheel mounting surface of brake rotors. Rotate the axel so that the hole is at the 11'o'clock position on the driver side and 1'o'clock position on the passenger side (this is done independantly of each other). You'll see a toothed gear, with the teeth pointing out towards you, thats the part that gets rotated to adjust the shoes. First apply the e-brake up until you hear about 10-clicks, then take a flat blade screw driver and rotate that gear until it contacts the drum surface, the wheel/brake rotor should not move at this point. I suggest you count the amount you flick the gear to keep it even on both sides. once you get it to where it needs to be, back it off a few clicks towards loose. Put wheels on and apply ebrake to full like normal. if you're happy with it, tighten everything up. if you're not or when went the wrong way the first time, do it over til you get it right! I also suggest making suyre your rotor is tightened down with either open ended lugs or an oversized nut that allows your stock lugs to tighten down it. That way you dont risk it being loose and messing up your adjustment any.

Easy way to do it, take it to a mechanic, it doesnt need to be infiniti unless you're under warranty.

Um, you could be tightening the shoes too much to get it to tighten the cable. You should adjust the shoes until they touch the drum (can't turn it) and then back off a few clicks (so the drum moves easy).

If the cable is STILL too loose, you need to adjust the cable.

You're right, I corrected my advice. I had to fiddle with it a few times before I got it right. Hardest part was remembering which direction of the gear tightened or loosened.
