Brake Pad Differences

Hi guys,

So to start, I have a 2005 G35 Coupe (non-Brembos).

I need to change my front brake pads and I am utterly confused. I bought some Project Mu's from someone off eBay and he said they were for my G35, but the box says they are for 180SX/Silvia. So after researching the Project Mu website, I found a number of different part numbers.

http://project-mu.co.jp/matching-en/...-matching.html

From what I can decipher, according to the list, the correct part# for me would be F249. But to add to the confusion, F239 & F249 look identical on the illustration. F209, F238, F240, F250 also look identical to one another in the illustrations and some are for the Skyline/G35's.

So I decided to make a trip to Infiniti to help solve this mystery. I asked the guy if I could see a set of OEM front pads for my car. He first brings out a set which looks identical to the Project Mu's I have, but were thinner in size (probably due to thickness of pad). Then he asks me for my VIN which I gave and he then brings out a set that is wider. Now it seems to me that this correlates to the Project Mu part F249.

But, I wanted to know if there was definitive info on why supposedly the 2005 coupe front pads are different. I've tried to check different manufacturers of pads and they all have different year ranges for the coupe. Some say the 2005 is different than others some say 2005-06. Are some pads interchangeable or is this a mistake?

The 2005 coupes have exclusively sized brake components. Its actually one good reason not to buy an 05 unless you know you plan on upgrading the whole brake system. As a result, there are not as many aftermarket brake options as there is for all of the other years.

Solutions:

Stick with OE replacement parts
Upgrade to OEM brembo setup
Upgrade to 06+ sport brakes
Upgrade to G37 Akebono kits
Upgrade to BBK from StopTech, Wilwood, Brembo, Rotora etc

If you go with any of the setups above, skip the G37 Akebono kit. I have it on my G37 sedan and it is much worse than the OEM Brembos. I'll have to upgrade the brake pads and install SS brake lines to get it up to par with the G35 Brembos.

I have no experience with the other BBKs.

Thanks for the info. I'm happy with my car's braking system. i don't do any hard braking or track. Although I would love a BBK or even Brembos, the added cost in the long run isn't something I want to pay, or would even need.

So then no other years' pads fit the 2005, even the 2006? Anyone know why the changes were made? Any advantages/disadvantages to the design?

What are the differences w/ the sport brakes? I wasn't aware they had a different braking system. How much is this upgrade running?

This makes me so mad, I just spent the whole morning trying to change front brake pads and my 2005 front pads are not at any autozone or pep boys. the dealer wants over $80 for a set. This sux so bad. So the only option is the dealer for front brake pads on a 2005 G35 coupe with 19 inch wheels?
