I've heard it called both. I think the technical difference is if the bearing bolts on. vs having a protruding axle shaft that the hub rides on.

Technically i think you are right. Maybe later i'll go back and change it.

But anyway, great job and this write-up will definitely come in handy.
I've seen that part called a spindle before, but usually when it looks like this -

On my old Monte, the rotor and hub were one piece with the bearings loaded inside, and they spun on the shaft. Either way, it works for me!

I guess that's the difference.

Spindle has the axle shaft as part of the unit and the bearings ride on the shaft.

Knuckle has a bearing assemble to the unit and the hub presses into it.

But yes, it's a knuckle

I think it's one or the other...most likely bearing only. A decent price yes, but prob doesn't include the hub.

You can try ordering it, and see what ypu get. I would bet a bearing shows up as the price is in the correct range.

Aside from the Dealer...eBay.

They are sold by dealers there at cheaper prices

I just nought one of these today for my other side which I'll do next weekend now that I consider the job pretty easy

Good source for the bearings too

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OEM-I...e#ht_500wt_948

$125 shipped

Ive bought from both sellers. Got both my hubs from the above seller and one bearing from below. The other bearing I got from rock auto.

just out of curiosity... How many km / miles did you have before needing to replace your front bearing and hub assembly? Personally I just had mine done on my 2006 g35x with 137,000km.

I changed both fronts around 80-85k miles. Both were pretty bad.

I think I noticed them going bad around 70k miles.

I have 127k on my g35x and I just did them today. I left the knuckle on at the top bolt, and banged bearing and hubs out with a BFH. It was so nice to ride around nice and quietly.
The job is not hard, its getting the bearing out of the steering knuckle, and manuvering that bolt by the arm off. I took my bearing and hub, which are only sold separately and not pressed for the 2005 G35x, so $28 to pep boys and they pressed them for me.
Apparently these hubs and bearing are readily available from the dealer. I paid 340 for hub and bearing here at stealership in NJ. I just wanted it done. I returned a torque wrench I rented from Pep Boys, so the job cost me parts and $28 to have them press the bearing into assembly and about 2 hours of my time. Not a hard job at all and the reward is great because now your car is quiet as it can be.
Good luck!

It looks like this ebay seller has them pressed. Yes, it's for a 2006 but wouldn't it be the same for a 2005??

Scratch my previous post. My ebay link was for hub only.

Dealership quoted $385 for bearing + hub and $260 for labor. I'm going for it. Getting it done on Wednesday. Can't take it anymore.

My cv boot is busted, but they want me to replace the whole shaft. Is it because labor would be in fact cheaper to replace & install the shaft as supposed to the boot itself?

Not much of a difference. Pulling the boot off and replacing it at that point is not much more work.

Only reason i could think of is the leaking boot has compromised the shaft and needs to be replaced anyway, or they have a ton of mark-up on the shaft vs replacing the boot.
