The subtle clunk seems to be coming right from the brake pedal...

My girlfriend insisted she was hearing a clunk in the brakes when she drove my car. I could never recall hearing anything - of course, was expecting it would be a sound coming from the front of the car.
Then, the technician at the shop that just installed a set of tires for me, after driving the car into the shop, said "you have a little clunk sound when braking".
Whaddayaknow - confirms that I am either missing something, or I'm used to it.
But then after driving the car away from the shop, I immediately noticed. Sounds like the clunk is coming from the brake pedal. I can hear it as soon as I apply brakes at any speed. Very hard to hear at speed due to road and engine noise, but when rolling slowly, a "thud" as I depress the pedal. Strange thing about it, is I was then able to produce the sound while at a stop. Pumping the pedal while parked, in neutral, with car on, same noise but very minor. It must've always done this, or appeared so gradually that I didn't notice. I bought the car new, and now has 148k on it. I replaced the front rotors and pads about 5000 miles ago, but my girlfriend said she heard it starting before that.
