Pics of 245-40-18's on stock rims?

I just ordered (5 - 7 days) a set (245-40-18) of Mich Pilot Sport PS2's for my 2005 G35 with sport / aero package. I am having buyer's remorse and have even seem them yet. I'm terrified that the additional fender space is going to make my G look like sh*t. I do NOT want to do any lower to compensate (it's a lease) so I have live with the results (once mounted). If it's going to look bad I won't have them mounted I'll just eat the shipping and call it a lesson learned.

Any fellow G owners who have done the same and can provide pics to ease my troubled mind?

I don't have any pics of that set up but I can tell you that I would not recommend it at all. It is approx 1/2" shorter than the OEM 235/45 which means your gap will increase by about 1/2".

If you want to go to a 245 tire...then you should get 245/45/18. It will look nice on the OEM and close your gap about another 0.20" but the wider and beefer tire will fill the wheel well much better and look lower than it actually is.

I have 245.40.18 on the stock sport rims and i dont mind the gap but that's also because i will be lowering the car and switching to 19's soon. If you're not planning on dropping then you should trade your 245.40 for 245.45, you wont like the gap at all

Chico, I might be going with the 245/45/18 setup too (that's if I end up closing the deal on the 05 sports). Just curious how you calculate the .20 inch gap? With the smaller gap would my X look like the stock rwd height? I went to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and punch in the differences between 235/45/18 and 245/45/18 and this is what they say. I can't make out how you get .20 inch. Sorry...

Stock Tire
side wall 4.2 in
radius 13.2 in
diameter 26.3 in
circumf 82.7 in
revs/mi 766

New Tire
side wall 4.3 in
radius 13.3 in
dameter 26.7 in
circumf 83.8 in
revs/mi 756

Thanks..........

I believe the correct answer would be because of the difference in the tire diameters..... 26.7 - 26.3 = 0.4. But you only count the 1/2 that's up on top . 1/2 of 0.4 is 0.2...... I'm 99% sure that's how he came up with that.

That's correct. That's one way to do it.

So that means it closes the gap .2 of an inch all around the fender/sidewall right?. I guess that's not really much but it's better than nothing.

Jimmyc13, I saw on your signature you have the HKS sport muffler. When are you going to install it? I am just curious how it sounds compare to stock muffler.

Chico...thanks for your reply.

My goal is to wait until the snow season is over (though it's been not very winter-like on & off lately).....probably not till April . The stainless muffler is way too nice looking to mount in the winter. If you're interested in how it sounds, forum member "Andycon" has a thread where he has 7 or so different sound clips....you should definitely check it out, as you'll get a good feel for it!! I did a lot of researching on this forum & P.M.'ing before purchasing it.

Thanks. I actually heard those clips already. They do sound very throaty but he has the plenum which I don't (I only have stillen & z-tube)

I'd imagine it's very similar though.

stock 235/45-18 options are crap

am planning to get pilot sport a/s 245/45-18 which is the closest size available to stock I believe - and to mount them on the stock 7.5" rim.

am a little hesitant though because 7.5" seems to be the minimum wheel width for a 245 wide tire.

Do you guys think there might be any negative handling effects after switching to 245's on the stock rim - will the handling be less sharp?

thanks in advance for your comments

I cancelled the order on the 245-40-18 PS2's and ordered a set of 245-45-18 Eagle F1 GS-D3's since the PS2's aren't made in the this size. The thought of additional fender space was too much to keep the Michelin's. Thanks for the input.

please post a pic or two once you get them - am curious how well they'd fit on a stock 18" rim.

thanks.

I had the eagles you ordered in the exact same size and having a larger OD makes the car feel floaty and less planted. The tires are excellent I used them for 15k on my G sedan, but I am much happier with my 245/40 tires I am running now. Having a larger OD on our cars makes them handle real poorly. You will see for yourself.

Also the 45's are 29 lbs per (heavy), but the GS-D3s seem like a heavy tire to begin with. I plan on going with the 40s trading off extra gap for more performance. Wish they had more 235 size choices though.
