If you're set on that particular car, and you're going to finance, I'd offer them the $30,000, negotiate up from there to around $31,000, and be prepared to walk away if they won't budge. That being said...it's the lease & finance rates that are really the problem. Factoring those in, and the fact that the vehicle is 2 years old now...I'd have to say that it's a losing situation, unless it someone else's money you're throwing away...

That $599/month they quoted you for the lease...is that taxes in?

yea he said everything taxes and all it would be $599 a month for 48 months $800 down..that includes first months Car note and taxes adn dealer fees

Well if it was meant to be yours it would have. Probably better off, that is still a VERY high payment. WHy would you want to pay that for 2 years? It sounds like you need to watch your money, and $600 a month plus insurance isnt something smart. Better off they sold it. Save up, try to privately sell yours so you can get more money for it, and see what comes up.

why not just get a car you can afford???? Is it really imperative you have a higher end car if in all reality you really can't afford it? Working pay check to pay check just to have a nice car is no way to live and waaaay too many people to that. Having a nice car isn't a right, it's something that should be earned. It just seems like you are trying so hard to have a flashy car, just stay within your means already. Just my 2 cents.

That's not a bad price on the A4, and the insurance would likely be cheaper than it is on your current G...which might be a nice break for your parents...

I would have gone with the brand new 06 G. Who cares if you spend a few extra bucks a month, at least you'll be happy and have peace of mind. Now it's too late.

He has negative equity on his '04 G which I assume he did zero down on...add that onto a "new" yet already depreciated '06 G and he's just looking for his parents to bail his *** out or credit counseling.

Even without changing cars, I question the viability of the purchase of the '04.

If you can't come up w/ 10% down on a new car and you're not even factoring insurance, I have no idea how you plan on surviving once they stop paying insurance. Given you're already 21...I somehow don't see them paying for it when you're in your late 20's and driving an 9yr old car that's consumed nearly 30k in payments not to mention massive amounts of maintenance by that time.

Assume you wait 1.5 years until you probably graduate...jump on a 1-2yr old G37. You've put in $8k in payments toward your old G and it'll likely be worth ~10k-12k meaning you're still 2-4k behind. Any money you got for a down on an '08 G37 will be down that much. Assuming 2 years worth of depreciation on a well optioned ~42k G37 puts you in the low 30's. OTD you're still out nearly 37-38k once you factor how upside down you are.

Let's say you've tucked away 3k away from repairs/mods on the '04 putting you at a nice round 34k financed. Assuming you get 7% (decent rate for a used car) and you're looking at a payment of $673/mon not including insurance. Given your parents likely won't support you once you've graduated and gotten a job, you'll be out a minimum ~$500/6 mon on that car if your record is perfect. That puts your vehicle expenditure at $750/mon not including gas.

That sounds affordable if you have a decent job when you have no other expenses. If you're trying to buy a home, they don't like to see you break 8% of your monthly gross. Unless you plan to come out making $101,000 salary, few places will give you a reasonable rate to buy. So unless you're planning on a career on Wall St., you may want to get out from this car as well and just get a cheap beater. Given the avg starting salary of college grads is in the 40's, you either need to be sure you're in a badass major or know that your parents enjoy bailing you out.

I would seriously re-evaluate why you need such a nice car in college. Your other choices will all need significantly more maintenance than most G's despite your headaches. I haven't known an Audi owner that didn't spend a lot of time at the dealer and that Bimmer you mentioned is ancient(it's 7 years old if you didn't notice + convertible top).

Another rule of thumb: there are exceptions to every rule... True, the 'dealer invoice' price doesn't accurately reflect the actual cost to the dealer for that vehicle (holdbacks and incentives play a huge part)...however, it isn't that uncommon (especially in today's market) for a dealer to take a hit on a new vehicle if they know they'll make a profit on the consumer's trade-in.
